If you’re an arcade racer fan, chances are you’ve played one of Alex Ward and Fiona Sperry’s games. These two co-founders of Criterion Games have played a huge role in the creation of games like Burnout and some of the more recent Need for Speed titles, after the development team became primarily focused on racers in 2000. Matt Webster will be taking over lead development duties for the game currently being created, titled “Project Zero,” and he will continue as the lead in the future. EA stated the following:
“The incredibly creative and talented team at Criterion are hard at work on a new project for next-gen consoles as new IP continues to be a major priority across EA. Matt Webster is leading development of the new game and the Criterion studio moving forward. Matt has been part of Criterion for years and has an exciting vision for this new game.”
As for Ward and Sperry, they will be moving forward to start a new company. I am eager to hear what this is; will they continue making racers or will they be moving on to something entirely new? Either way, it’s always exciting to hear about veteran devs moving on to continue following their own vision.
