Engineers and Scientists – What They Do in XCOM 2

Recommended Videos

XCOM 2 has you in charge of soldiers out on the battlefield as well as the day to day workings of a base. As Commander, you choose what is built and researched next within the HQ, effectively improving the forces against the alien threat. Besides you and your soldiers, Engineers and Scientists are the greatest assets to your base.

Engineers are the ones that can excavate different areas of the base in order to gain supplies and other resources as well as make room for building a facility. Engineers will be able to take these empty spaces and build whatever facilities you want, as well as work within them in order to provide bonuses to said facility.

Scientists help out Dr. Tygan with researching new technologies. They are incredibly useful to make new tech roll in, in the minimum time possible. With certain, important research (sometimes necessary for the main missions), you actually need multiple scientists working at once or else you won’t be able to complete it.

Engineers and Scientists – How to Get Them in XCOM 2

With these two kinds of additions to the base being so beneficial, how do you get Scientists and Engineers? Over time, you can receive a message that more units are available for recruitment at your Resistance HQ. Usually there will a scientist or engineer and this pops up after you receive your income and bonuses. Many random missions that pop up can yield either one (or both) as rewards for successfully completing them, as well. Usually, these are extraction missions where you will be evacuating a VIP and they happen to be a scientist or engineer. However, there is another way to obtain them besides the randomized mission rewards; you can buy them off of the Black Market once you’ve discovered its location. They will be periodically in stock and you can buy them for a hefty portion of Intel (at least compared to the other things you could buy).

Be sure to stock up on as many as you can and grab them whenever they randomly become available. You’ll be on your way to building the ultimate base and having all the technology to take down some alien scum.
