I have spent hundreds of hours in the sunless depths of the Mines since the 1.6 update dropped, and I can tell you that the Ghostfish is no longer just a one-off item for your Community Center Specialty Fish Bundle. While it used to be a low-value catch, the latest patch has turned it into a high-efficiency industrial resource. Whether you are trying to satisfy a hungry raccoon or looking to maximize your gold-per-minute with the new Fish Smoker, I have figured out the exact steps you need to take to dominate the subterranean fishing meta.
Where to Catch Ghostfish in the Mines
When I am looking to fill my inventory quickly, I always head straight to the Mines. You can find these pale, blind fish on Floors 20 and 60. To get there efficiently, just walk into the Mines entrance northeast of Robin’s house, right-click the elevator, and select your floor. Once you step out, look for the underground lake which is usually positioned on the right side of the screen.
In my experience, Floor 60 is actually superior to Floor 20 for pure farming. My technical analysis of the game’s spawn logic shows that while Floor 20 is shared with the Stonefish, Floor 60 shares its pool with the Ice Pip. On Floor 60, the Ice Pip has a very low precedence and only a 5 percent spawn check success rate. This means the game defaults to the Ghostfish much more frequently, leading to a higher catch-per-hour ratio.
If you are just starting out, keep these requirements in mind:
- Ghostfish can be caught in any season, any weather, and at any time of day.
- The mini-game difficulty is set to 50 with a Mixed movement pattern, making it much easier than the darting Ice Pip or the heavy Lava Eel.
- I recommend at least an Iridium Rod equipped with a Trap Bobber if you are also hoping to snag those rare Floor 60 Ice Pips while you are down there.
- If you find fishing a bit too tedious, you can always check out the best Stardew Valley mods to improve your gameplay experience to see if there are any visual or mechanical tweaks that fit your playstyle.
Getting Ghostfish from Combat Drops
I often find that I do not even need to cast a line to get what I need. If you are already farming for Coal or Frozen Tears, you should target the Ghosts found on Floors 51 through 79. These spooky enemies have a base 8 percent chance to drop a Ghostfish when they vanish.
To really maximize your loot, I always equip the Burglar’s Ring, which you get from Gil at the Adventurer’s Guild after slaying 500 Dust Sprites. Because the ring forces the game to roll for loot twice, your effective drop rate jumps to 15.36 percent. I have calculated the math here: 1 – (1 – 0.08)^2 = 0.1536. This is a great way to stock up on fish while you are also farming for Hardwood in Stardew Valley or other crafting materials.
The High Profit 1.6 Fish Smoker Strategy
The real game-changer in Version 1.6 is the Fish Smoker. I have run the numbers, and the Return on Investment (ROI) for smoking a Ghostfish is staggering if you have the right professions. By default, the Smoker doubles the sell price of the fish, but it also categorizes the result as an Artisan Good.
If you have chosen the Angler profession at Fishing Level 10 and the Artisan profession at Farming Level 10, the multipliers stack in a way that is frankly overpowered. Here is how the math breaks down for an Iridium-quality Ghostfish:
- Base Price: 45g
- Iridium Quality (2x): 90g
- Angler Profession (1.5x): 135g
- Smoker Multiplier (2x): 270g
- Artisan Profession (1.4x): 378g
This results in a total 4.2x multiplier compared to the base fish price. I always make sure to keep a few smokers running near my Mine entrance chests. Since it only takes 50 in-game minutes to process, you can smoke your entire day’s catch before you even head home for bed. This is far more profitable than making Truffles in Stardew Valley or other mid-tier artisan products early on.
Using the Bait Maker for Targeted Ghostfish Farming
One of the coolest new machines in the 1.6 patch is the Bait Maker, which you can craft once you hit Fishing Level 6. I found that putting a single Ghostfish into this machine yields 5 to 10 Targeted Baits. When you use these, the locational chance and spawn rate for Ghostfish are multiplied by 1.66.
What is interesting about the code logic is that most Mine-exclusive fish like the Lava Eel are actually immune to Targeted Bait because they use a non-standard spawning algorithm. However, the Ghostfish is the exception. I have used this to essentially eliminate trash from my Floor 60 runs. By using Targeted Bait, I have seen my Ghostfish catch rate increase by nearly 70 percent, which is a massive boost for your daily gold totals. If you are struggling with other elusive catches, you might want to read up on how to catch Midnight Carp in Stardew Valley to see how those requirements differ.
Feeding the Raccoon at the Giant Stump
In the late game of Version 1.6, you will eventually unlock the Raccoon family at the Giant Stump in Cindersap Forest. I noticed that after you complete the first few requests, the Raccoon’s wife starts asking for 3 Ghostfish quite frequently in her fifth and subsequent requests.
Completing these is the only way to earn Raccoon Coins for the Raccoon Shop, where I usually buy Mystery Boxes or the Jewel of the Sea book. If you have been following my guide and have a Fish Pond full of Ghostfish, you will always have these ready to go. A fully populated pond reproduces every 2 days, giving you a steady stream of fish and white Ghostfish Roe.
The Secret Lore of the Smoluanu
I love digging into the story of the Valley, and the Ghostfish has a deep connection to the Dwarves, also known as the Smoluanu. If you have found the Dwarvish Translation Guide, you might know that the Dwarves are actually from space and were forced underground during the 1000 year Elemental War with the Shadow People.
The Ghostfish is described as being blind because it evolved in total darkness alongside the Dwarven ruins. I have found it poetic that these fish thrive in the same lightless lakes where Krobus and the Dwarf once fought their ancient battles.
