How to Play as Mighty in Sonic Mania Plus

Sonic Mania Plus is out, and those that pick it up or add it onto their existing Sonic Mania file can play as two old-school returning characters: Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel. If you have no idea who these characters are, you wouldn’t be alone. Outside of appearing in SegaSonic the Hedgehog, an arcade game from the early 90s, Mighty and Ray have only appeared a few times in Sonic games and media. They should be appreciative they get to come along and join Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles in what is the best Sonic game ever made.

In Sonic Mania Plus, Mighty can be played in every game mode just like everyone else. Here’s how to play as Mighty. In Mania Mode, simply select Mighty like you would anyone else, whether it’s a save file or a no save file. The same goes for Competitive Mode, just select Mighty like you would any other character.

Encore mode is a little different. In Encore mode you technically only have one life, but you can use all five characters in the same file and have backups in case one of them dies (two active at a time).  To play as Mighty in Encore Mode, look for 1UP boxes which add any missing characters to your bench, or play the new pinball mini game by jumping in the checkpoint stars as you pass them with at least 25 rings. If you have Mighty rescued, but he’s not active, look for the new character swap boxes which will mix up your team. If you have him out, but you’re not actively using him, press Triangle/X/Y (PS4, Switch, Xbox One) to make him active and control him.

Mighty has a few special abilities that give him an edge. First, by double tapping the jump button, you can send Mighty crashing quickly back down to earth for a powerful attack that will destroy enemies it hits, nearby enemies, and crack open new paths that only he can get to. Also, while rolled up into a ball, his armor protects him from spikes that would otherwise hurt him. Just keep in mind that he can only absorb hits once, he will then become unfurled and vulnerable again. His weaknesses are that he has no flying ability at all, and doesn’t have anything that helps him with speed such as Sonic’s drop dash.
