While Nocturne does feature a traditional leveling system where you gain experience points from fighting enemies and level up after that, it’s not enough to just rack up levels if you want to beat the game. You also have to make use of the Magatamas, which are crucial to covering your protagonist’s weaknesses and changing up his strengths.

Magatamas can be obtained from bosses, item boxes, and some can also be purchased from the various stores you find around Tokyo. Ingesting a Magatama will allow you to change your protagonist’s affinities, as well as change up the types of abilities you learn as you level up.

The good news is that the protagonist will remember all previously learned abilities, so you can change out your Magatama once you’ve gotten all available abilities and switch to a new one to start working your way towards other abilities.
