Resident Evil Village Difficulty Settings: Can You Change? Is There a Difficulty Trophy/ Achievement?

So you’re ready to reunite with Ethan Winters and head to the mysterious European village in Resident Evil Village. You’re going to finally meet Lady Dimitrescu, explore her castle, and feel all that Resident Evil 4 nostalgia come flooding back. Before you start, you may have a few questions regarding the game’s difficulty. Such as whether you can change your difficulty mid-playthrough, and whether there you’ll earn trophies/ achievements based on the difficulty setting you play Resident Evil Village on. We’ll give you the answers to all that and more below.

First things first, there are four difficulty settings in the game available to you. These are:

  • Casual
  • Standard
  • Hardcore
  • Village of Shadows

The first three are available to you from the beginning, but Village of Shadows is only available at the start if you get the Deluxe Edition’s Trauma Pack. If you got the standard version, you’ll need to beat the game first to unlock this difficulty setting.

There are a few differences between each difficulty mode; Casual is for newcomers or players who aren’t too good at shooter games. Enemies have less health and deal less damage, and resources are much easier to come by. Standard is the default difficulty, and you can expect a bit of a challenge when playing through the game.

Hardcore causes enemies to have more health and deal even more damage, and you’ll need to be really careful with how you use your resources. Finally, Village of Shadows shakes things up pretty severely as you will now encounter late-game enemies earlier in the playthrough, and they’ll also have much greater health and damage output. Checkpoints are also further apart from each other, and enemies will show up in greater numbers.

Can You Change Difficulty?

Once you’ve chosen your difficulty at the beginning of the game, you won’t be able to change it on that save file from then on. If you’re finding it too hard or too easy, you’ll need to start a new game on the difficulty setting you want to change to.

We’d recommend starting off on the Standard difficulty setting. Once you’ve done a playthrough at this setting, you can then look to move up to the Hardcore or Village of Shadow difficulties for an even tougher challenge.

Resident Evil Village Difficulty Trophies/ Achievements

There are four achievements/ trophies tied to each of the game’s difficulty settings listed above. These are as follows:

  • Great Dad – Finish the story on at least Casual difficulty. (Bronze/ 15G)
  • Best Dad Ever – Finish the story on at least Standard difficulty. (Bronze/ 15G)
  • World’s Best Dad – Finish the story on at least Hardcore difficulty. (Silver/ 30G)
  • Universe’s Best Dad – Finish the story on the Village of Shadows difficulty. (Gold/ 70G)
