How to Wait and Pass Time in Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 is finally out and available to players, and it’s understandable that they’d want to immerse themselves in everything it has to offer. There’s a time and place for certain missions and the more nefarious undertakings of a western legend though, and for that reason, we’re here to help you figure out how to wait and pass time in Red Dead Redemption 2.

How to Wait

Should you find yourself in a situation where you need to wait until a later time to engage in a quest or side activities, there are a few ways to go about it. One is to find a bed at either your gang’s main camp or at a hotel in one of the game’s main towns.

Once you find one, the option to sleep and rest until Morning, Noon or Night will become available, with the player returning after a short loading screen to find themselves at their desired time of day.

Players can also attempt to access a store after its business hours. This will trigger a choice to either leave or wait until it opens again, though the player can only use this to wait until a shop opens in the morning.

Either way though, it’s a convenient way for you to skip forward to a point where the town will be more lively, and open, than if you were just walking around in the middle of the night.

How to Pass Time

Regardless of which method players choose, both will pass time in game and allow for the player to move forward according to the game’s internal clock. This can be useful for accessing quests that only trigger during a certain time of day or for prompting a story moment that only occurs after the player has rested.

At night, for the most part, only the saloons will be open. If you want to access other vendor or people in town, you’ll want to pass the time in one of those two ways.

How to Change How Long You Wait

That said, there isn’t much control in how long the player can pass time for aside from the bed’s Morning/Noon/Night options.

All of these place the player at roughly the same point in time on any given day, and if something specifies a certain time that isn’t in line with the exact moment when they load back into the game, players will still have to wait out the clock until the quest or event prompts.

There isn’t a Skyrim-like system where you can specify exactly how long you want to wait.

Does it Save Your Game

No matter what option players choose to use to pass time, the game will create an auto save marked for just before they triggered the wait.

Note that this can be erased by other autosaves however, so should you want to continue from that specific pre-wait point, a hard save has to be made manually.

To preform a hard save, simply open the main menu with the options/menu button (depending on your console) and then selecting Save Game.

Hopefully this helps you to understand a bit more about how to wait and pass time. Red Dead Redemption 2 is currently available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. For more on the game, check out our Red Dead Redemption 2 guide wiki for everything you need to know about the game.
