Getting the Metal Coat in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

The Metal Coat is an item you can get your Pokemon to hold, and it’s particularly useful for Steel-type Pokemon. Getting it can be a little tricky, however, if you don’t really know where to look.

There are two ways to get a Metal Coat: by catching a Pokemon that has a chance of holding it, and by heading to Iron Island.

Magnemite, Bronzor, and Beldum all have a chance of already holding a Metal Coat when you catch one in the wild, but if you’re actively looking to get one, your chances will be better with Magnemite. Simply use the Explorer’s Kit to head to the Grand Underground; Magnemite spawns are pretty common in that area so you should have no problem finding them, and start catching them until you get one that’s holding a Metal Coat.

If you already have the Thief TM, or the Thief move on one of your Pokemon, you can use it to steal the item from Magnemite instead.

You can also get a guaranteed one by going to the Iron Island, which is unlocked only after you reach Canalave City. Speak with the sailor standing near the dock to head to Iron Island, and once you’ve disembarked, head inside the small house and speak with the NPC to get a Metal Coat for free.

What It’s For

The Metal Coat is a special item that will help certain Steel-type Pokemon evolve. For instance, if you want to evolve your Onix into Steelix, and Scyther into Scizor, you’ll need to have them hold the Metal Coat in order to trigger the evolution.

That’s all you need to know about how to get the Metal Coat in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Be sure to check our guide wiki for more tips and information on the game.
