This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information

While your relationship with the troops at your disposal never amounts to much more than feeding them and sending them into combat, you don’t have to face Caldaria without a buddy to hold hands with. Companions are available to recruit, and they serve an important purpose as both a powerful warrior and administrator of your kingdom. Here’s how to get companions in Mount & Blade 2 Bannerlord.

What Companions Are Used For

Companions essentially serve as your right-hand man/woman in Mount & Blade 2. As such, they can perform a number of important duties that you might otherwise have to perform yourself.

This includes completing quests on your behalf, improving relations with nearby settlements, administering a castle or town, handling trade caravans, and generating income for you passively.

Obviously, having a companion fill in for you takes a lot of the leg work out of building a Kingdom.

Further, after you complete the “Rebuild your Clan” quest, you’ll also be able to assign them with a special “Role,” which sees them specialize in a skill tree, such as scout, engineer, quartermaster, or surgeon.

How to Get Companions in Mount & Blade 2 Bannerlord

Finding and recruiting a companion isn’t especially difficult in theory. Every large settlement has a tavern, and each tavern you’ll typically find a companion to recruit. They have very particular names, like “Asha the She Wolf.”

The only thing difficult about actually recruiting them –particularly at the beginning of your campaign– is that they cost a pretty penny. You’ll typically need 4,000 Denars or more to get them on board.

It’s worth pointing out that you can actually use the game’s encyclopedia to look up and locate companions. To do so, filter by “heroes” and “wanderers.”

How to Get More Companions

Your ability to recruit more companions depends on your clan level. For each clan level, you’ll have access to another one or two companions. Note: you can also marry a spouse in Bannerlord, which will effectively serve as another companion.

Further down the line, you’ll have the option to increase your companion limit is via the “Ruler” perk. This is found under the Steward skill at level 250. Unlocking this perk will mean you’re given an extra companion slot for every Town you own.
