How to Drive Cars Well in Mafia III

Driving plays a very important role in New Bordeaux, the world of Mafia III that has been based on a 1960’s New Orleans. In fact, your very first mission in the game will task you with driving across the city. With that in mind, it’s very important to know how to drive, so here’s what you need to know:

Enter/Exit Vehicles – To enter a vehicle (something you’ll probably want to do if you want to drive) hold down the Square/X button. This same button is also used to exit a vehicle you’re in. Two things to note, though. The first is that some missions will require you to remain in a specific vehicle, so you won’t be able to exit. Secondly, you can ‘bail’ by holding square while accelerating. This will send your vehicle hurtling forward as you dive out from the driver’s seat.

Accelerating and Braking –  These are the basics of driving in any game. Accelerating is done by holding down R2/RT. The longer you hold down the button, the faster you’ll go. Braking is done slowly by holding L2/LT (which will lead to reversing after you come to a stop), or quickly by holding Circle/B to use the handbrake. The handbrake can also be used to make sharp turns.

Change Point of View  Pressing left on the d-pad will allow you to change from a far camera, a close camera, and first person view.

Change Radio Station – Everyone knows that music is an important part of the driving experience in any game. To change the station, press right on the d-pad.

Move Camera –  Just like when you’re walking, you can rotate the camera while driving by using the right thumbstick. Clicking the stick (R3) will look directly behind you, and releasing will recenter the camera forward.

Combat While Driving – You can fire certain weapons while driving. To do so, hold L1/LB to bring up your weapon wheel and choose a firearm. Once equipped, you can fire by pressing R1/RB. Tapping L1/LB will actually allow you to cycle between targets, while holding Triangle will let you toggle vehicle targetting.

Ramming – Pressing X/A will cause you to ram forward with your vehicle. You can ram left or right by pressing the button while turning as well. This can quickly get a vehicle off of you, or allow you to break through certain structures.

That’s everything you need to know when you drive in Mafia III’s New Bordeaux. Make sure to always keep an eye out for cops, and if witnesses see you being reckless, you’re going to have some trouble.
