This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information

Greedfall introduces you to the mechanics of the game by containing the first few missions to a small town area before you leave for the larger Teer Fradee. At the end of the quests there, you’ll face a tough boss. So that you can get past him and continue the game, here’s everything you need to know about how to beat the tree creature boss in The Great Departure quest in Greedfall.

As you’ll know, the fight against the creature takes place at the end of the very long first main quest in Greedfall. As you make your way down to the dock to board the ship, a sailor shouts at you that the creature has woken up. Soon, it has burst out the side of the ship and you need to fight it.

These enemies actually appear a few times throughout the game, with you getting good rewards for fighting them, but this time is arguably the toughest in the game because you won’t be very experienced or have unlocked many skills.

How to Beat Tree Creature Boss (The Great Departure Quest) in Greedfall

Now, while the tactics will change a little depending on what character class you chose at the start of the game, there’s one thing that’ll certainly help you. Be patient!

The Tree Creature in the Great Departure quest will kill you in three hits on normal difficulty and it’s pretty quick. If it knocks you down, you’ll often be too slow to get up again before it strikes again.

Therefore, take your time and look for his different attack types. Be sure to lock on to it with R3 so that you can look out for when he throws metal at you from his back.

By pressing X if you’re on PS4 (A on Xbox One) you’ll be able to quickly dodge those if you’re paying attention. He’ll easily catch you off guard with them if you’re not locked on though.

If you can, try to keep your distance. This is easier if you’re a Magic build and have Magic Potions to keep topping up your MP, but it’s easy to get tangled up in the creatures feet, so stay away if you can, dodging to safety when you can.

That might be harder if you’re a melee-focused character, so just be more patient and try not to strike just before the creature begins his swing or slam attacks.

He’ll either jump slightly or hunker down just before those attacks, so back off when you see them start. Then, when that animation is over, move in to attack again before moving away to regroup.

Also, since the creature in the Great Departure quest is pretty quick on his feet, be sure to use the tactical pause menu by pressing L1.

Rather than using potions that are bound to shortcuts, pause the game when you need to use one because the standard animation can be pretty slow and it takes your focus away from the dodge button, which you need to be ready to use at all times.

In short,

  1. Be sure to lock on with R3 first and then try to keep your eyes on the creature.

  2. Be patient, keeping your distance and keeping an eye out for his swinging attacks.

  3. Attack when he pauses before retreating again.

This should be easier for Magic builds, but others will find it easier to break the creature shields, making it easier to deal damage.
