Is God of War Open World?

Kratos is back with the new God of War, and like the character himself, things have changed a lot for the series. The Spartan warrior has moved north to the pantheon of Norse Mythology, and he now has a young son named Atreus. There have been some big overhauls to the series’ gameplay, making this new entry an entirely different experience. Naturally, this brings up the question of if God of War is an open world game, falling in with other recent PS4 exclusives like Horizon Zero Dawn. Well, the answer to that is complicated, but no, God of War is not an open world game.

Now we say it’s complicated because while you won’t be free to explore a huge open world, there is some degree of exploration in the game. The main story takes roughly 25-30 hours to complete, and it’s filled with multiple areas that have plenty of secrets and routes to take. You’ll often have the chance to backtrack and use new skills or abilities you’ve gained to explore areas you passed by before and find new secrets. To go along with this there are side quests to tackle, upgrades to get, and plenty of puzzles. In short, there’s a lot more to explore and do than past God of War games, but it’s not like your typical open world title.
