Everything You Need to Know about the Skill Tree in Fortnite
In addition to leveling up your heroes, building better weapons and leveling those up too, unlocking new perks for your characters and getting better traps and defenders for your fort, you will also have a multi-tier skill tree to pay attention to in Fortnite. The game makes mention of the skill tree but doesn’t really drive home some of the important aspects that you’ll really want to pay attention to. In all honesty, it’s pretty easy to glance over the skill tree and completely forget about its entire existence until a mission actually requires you to unlock one of the nodes.
Fortnite’s skill tree can feel a little unorganized but it shouldn’t be swept under the rug just because the interface discourages you from wanting to spend much time with it. Throughout Fortnite, you will earn skill points that can be used to unlock the different nodes on the skill tree. You’ll do this by scrolling over to the skills tab in the Fortnite’s home menu. Once you do this, simply scroll over and select which tier of the skill tree you want to access to start spending your points. You’ll have to unlock each new tier by reaching the end of the center brand on whatever skill tree came before it.
In the beginning, Fortnite won’t give you an option on how to spend your skill points. You will have to unlock the first string of skills before finally branching off into a part where you’ll have more options on which nodes to unlock next. These first few nodes unlock key features in Fortnite so it makes sense that the developers wouldn’t want to allow players to skip this part of the skill tree.
Once you get into the part of the skill tree that gives you more room for choices you’ll see that there are a variety of different kinds of things you’ll be unlocking. Some nodes will give basic stat boosts to your heroes while others may unlock yet another new feature in Fortnite, giving you useful new abilities or allowing you to command new types of heroes on the battlefield. There’s quite a bit of variety in the things you’ll find throughout the skill tree in Fortnite, so you may want to take the time to look ahead and see which skills you really want to work towards. This is particularly important because the skill tree isn’t necessarily as organized as you’d expect it to be.
What you’ll come to find, however, is that each branch tends to feature nodes that are particularly useful to a certain hero class. The top branch focuses on Soldier class. The next one down is all about the Constructors so you’ll find some pretty cool building nodes here. The branch in the middle focuses on more general nodes that impact gameplay for every hero class along with defenders and survivors you collect throughout the game. The next branch will be your chance to improve your Outlander heroes and the very last brand on the bottom focuses on the Ninja class.
Keep in mind that one of the most important nodes you’ll want to pay attention to are the leadership nodes, which allow you to add certain types of hero classes to your squad when on missions. While this may not seem incredibly important early on in Fortnite, you’ll certainly need to start filling those squad slots with varying hero classes the further you get into the game.
