Every Easter Egg and Secret in God of War so Far

This article is over 6 years old and may contain outdated information

God of War has been out a little while now, giving players a chance to scour it for Easter eggs and secrets. And even though the game’s director Cory Barlog alluded to there being tons hidden in the game, very few have been found. The ones we have found, though, are definitely worth searching for, and we’ll keep updating this piece as more trickle out. There are story spoilers for God of War ahead.

Infinity War

God of War fans have just found a pretty awesome reference to Avengers: Infinity War in the game. Spotted by Reddit user Moxxxxxi, the game contains each of the five infinity stones. The following items are clear throwbacks to each stone:

  • Andvari’s Soul – Soul Stone
  • Njord’s Temporal Stone – Time Stone
  • Eye of the Outer Realm – Space Stone
  • Ivaldi’s Corrupted Mind – Mind Stone
  • Asgard’s Shard of Existence – Reality Stone
  • Muspelheim Eye of Power – Power Stone

Better yet, there’s even a Gauntlet to hold them all in. By following Sidri the dwarf’s ‘Family Business’ favor, players will get their hands on a talisman called the Shattered Gauntlet. The item description is a clear nod to Thanos and his gauntlet and reads as follows:

‘An ancient relic of Hel deemed too powerful to remain whole, fragments of its former strength lie scattered throughout the realms.’

The Gauntlet can only house three stones at a time, but equipping them will allow Kratos to fire purple beams out of his fists, awesome.

Boat Captain

The Boat Captain is a character who shows up in a number of God of War games. He is booted into the mouth of a Hydra in the original God of War, returns in God of War II and is mentioned in God of War III. This time around he is alluded to as part of a Treasure Map quest called ‘The Boat Captain’s Key’. The description reads as follows:

‘With the Boat Captain in the Belly of the Hydra the key was mine! I traveled to a new land, but my ship was sunken along with my precious key. It lies just below the waves, perched on an underwater peak’

Foreshadowing

The ending of God of War is filled with revelations and twists. Many of these story beats are given via a series of runes on a wall, depicting Atreus’ true nature, as well as a look into the future. There’s also a similar mural that can be seen during your first fight with Baldur at the beginning of the game. At the first moment that Kratos unleashes Spartan Rage, the Stranger is pressed up against a stone slab. On this slab is a mural which shows much of the game’s later story. There’s Kratos’ final fight with Baldur, the flying ship, and the giants in Jotunheim.
