What the Little Blue Ghosts Are in Dragon Quest XI

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age is a grand return to form for the long-running franchise, and the first mainline Dragon Quest game we’ve gotten in the west since 2010. The biggest, and most obvious, change is the gorgeous graphical style used in the game, combining cel-shaded characters with photorealistic environments and objects. The world of Erdrea is an expansive one, and there’s quite a few creatures and people you’ll meet along the way, including mysterious little blue ghosts.

These adorable little ghosts consistently pop up all over the place in Dragon Quest XI, as you’re exploring environments, in towns, in dungeons, everywhere. They’re certainly mysterious, and you’re no doubt always wondering what they are and what their role in Erdrea is. Well, Dragon Quest XI won’t actually answer that question for a long time if you’re waiting to see it. Of course, if you just want to know the answer, that’s what we’re here to help with.

SPOILER WARNING: Ahead we’ll be discussing the nature of the creatures you see pop up throughout Dragon Quest XI, which means there are story segments and elements from after the first ending that will be spoiled just to explain everything. If you’d rather not know until you get there yourself, do not read any further.

This is your final warning…

After the first ending of Dragon Quest XI, reloading your save will see the story continue, and the party travel around the world. If you follow the markers, the party will eventually learn of a potential way to revive someone that’s dead. Eventually you’ll get a hint to follow the Spirits of Lost Time, the little blue ghosts, to a tower that will let you turn back the clock.

Finally you’ll head to the Tower of Lost Time, where the power of the Luminary lets him, and him alone, travel back to the past. The Spirits of Lost Time are basically spirits that have inhabited Erdrea since the beginning. In the flashbacks that show Erdwin’s journey it’s eventually revealed that the Spirits of Lost time saved Serenica after she arrived at the tower, turning her into the guardian you meet, who helps send you back to the past.

That’s all you need to know about the blue ghosts in Dragon Quest XI. For more tips and guides on the game, make sure to take a look at our extensive wiki guide.
