Creating your character is the most obvious thing you should do first in Destiny 2, but there’s a bit more that goes into it than just molding your virtual avatar’s face. You need to choose from one of three classes (Warlock, Hunter, and Titan), and that choice will determine how you go forward in the game.

If you asked me, I’d say choose a Warlock because we rule!… ahem, sorry, got a bit excited. But honestly, you should make sure to do the proper research and figure out which one suits you more. Find yourself defending your fellow guardians quite often? Why not go for a Titan. Perhaps you’re the loner type who pictures themselves a true tracker of alien scum. If that’s the case, then you may want to give the Hunter a gander. Either way, just make sure you choose wisely, as it can affect your gameplay.

Join a Clan

While the game is still fresh and there aren’t many clan activities just yet, you should still join one in Destiny 2. Unlike the first game, you’ll have the opportunity to do more than just have a random four letters before your name.

You can earn some neat rewards from playing together and completing difficult challenges. There are even some perks to helping out other players in the game who maybe don’t have anyone to play with. Become part of a team that means something and further your legend. 

Don’t Shy Away From the Story

While this may come as a surprise to nay sayers of the first game, Destiny 2 actually has a really good story that you’ll want to sit back and take in. Also, the story is necessary to unlock all of the other areas in the game (unless you’re fine with just having the EDZ to go nuts in).

You will need to stop at certain parts in Destiny 2’s narrative since they require you to reach a certain level, and you can use those points to do some exploration. Still, first on your to-do list should very well be, beat the story. This will net you some rewards, leave you with all the feels, and unlock a lot of content for you after the fact. So hop to it, Guardian.

Now, this next item on your to-do list can be interchangeable with the one that follows. It honestly depends on whether or not you’ve grabbed a Destiny 2 Fireteam yet. I personally think Lost Sectors are even more fun when you go spelunking on your lonesome.

Lost Sectors are small treasure caves that house some enemies and a powerful boss-type enemy. Some are quicker than others, but none are overly-challenging to the point where you can’t solo them with relative ease. You look for the icon posted on some surface (usually a wall or a big rock), then you find the entrance, say hello (with your gun, of course) and give some hiding aliens their what for. At the end, you’ll always have a loot chest to open, and this will help set you up for later activities.

No, not the cartoon, though you can have that playing in the background for some inspiration (cue Finn singing how he’ll “punch all your buns”). We’re talking the new activities Bungie has created for Destiny 2 that are essentially fully-fledged side quests. They offer more story, have dialogue, and provide some interesting scenarios that really dig into the lore of the worlds and the story of Destiny 2 as a whole.

You unlock more adventures as you progress through the story, so after beating the main campaign, it’s most certainly worth your time to go through and experience even more story now that it’s all available to you. 

Unlock Patrols

Unlike in the original Destiny, Patrols in Destiny 2 aren’t available to you until you’re about 60% done with the story. This is because you must first get into contact with Cayde-6 (don’t worry, it’s impossible to miss). After meeting the suave, mechanical hunter, go and talk to him back at the Farm to get a new mission on the EDZ. Completing this mission will unlock Patrols on all of the planets.

Patrols are crucial when it comes to getting a constant stream of rewards in Destiny 2, so you’ll definitely want this at the top of your list once available. You can have them running while you’re simply exploring, which is fun. Do note, though, that you can’t fast travel with a Patrol active.

I know you’ve been wanting to do this for like ever in Destiny 2, but we think you’re ready now. After clearing out the story to unlock everything, getting some sweet gear from Adventures and Lost Sectors, and just leveling up, you’re ready for some exploration.

The worlds of Destiny 2 are absolutely stunning, so you’ll want to take in the sights (either solo or with some friends). You can just stroll along looking at the Leviathan off to the distance while on Nessus, or maybe stare into the white abyss that is Vex Milk (it’s an organic substance that is part of the Vex, don’t step in it). EDZ has some beautiful locations waiting for you as well, hidden behind all of the debris left by the Fallen invasion and huge alien wars.

While you’re at it, grab some public events to do which now have Heroic triggers. These can drop some cool rewards. Plus, who doesn’t like fighting random bosses as they take an afternoon stroll?

Test Your Mettle

The Crucible is a place for everyone to test their skills against other Guardians. It’s perfect for training, and for earning copious amounts of bragging rights. Once you’re able to (after unlocking your first subclass), you’re going to want to dive right in, for a couple reasons.

The first is that it’s pretty darn fun. The new modes and the entire shift in balance make for some interesting battles. The second is that you can get some really great rewards from this mode. Granted, you’re not guaranteed anything, but more often than not you’ll get a drop, even if you didn’t win. And playing matches earns you Crucible Tokens which you can trade to Shaxx for some awesome legendaries. 

Xur, Agent of IX

Yes, the game just came out, but you want to start scouting out possible locations for everyone’s favorite, tentacle-faced purveyor of exotics. Xur is making a return in Destiny 2, though we wonder why he didn’t use his impressive arsenal to help during Ghaul’s invasion. He most likely saw a business opportunity rising from us getting our asses handed to us. It’s difficult to knock his hustle, and hustle is what he’ll do in Destiny 2.

He still sells exotics, this time accepting only Legendary Shards. However, he’s much more difficult to pin down this time. In the first game, he only appeared in social spaces. This time around he can appear in any public space (meaning the planets that you explore). Hopefully, this means that he has some better stuff for us to grab, we’ll just have to wait and see. 

Dance Party

10 Things You Should Do First in Destiny 2

If Guardians don’t dance in a social space, does it even exist? One thing that players loved to do in the Tower was dance before and after activities. It was a ritual of sorts, one that got our spirits up and prepared us for the challenges that awaited us on each planet’s surface.

You can bust out some sweet moves in Destiny 2, so why not share them? It’s a perfect way to kick off Destiny year four (or is it Destiny 2, year one?). Dancing helps build comradeship, fosters strong relationships, and potentially raises your chances at an exotic (that last part may not be true). If anything, it makes for a great video opening, so go out there and have some fun.
