How to Disarm Traps in Darkest Dungeon
With enemies breathing down your neck at every corridor, a dearth of torches and supplies, and the ever-increasing paranoia gnawing at the back of your party’s minds, running afoul of a trap can be one complication too many, causing damage, bleeding, blight, or just general unhappiness. Here’s what you need to know to disarm traps in Darkest Dungeon.
Though you may get lucky and dodge a sprung trap (dependent on the trap resistance of the hero that triggered it), disarming a trap before you pass over it is always your best bet for survival. In order to see a trap beforehand, you will have to have scouted the corridor you are passing through. Scouting occurs occasionally when you enter a new room, and will reveal what lies ahead in the surrounding corridors. Its activation depends on the light of your torch (a well-lit one yields a better chance than a dim one), some camping skills and your heroes’ quirks.
If a trap has been scouted in Darkest Dungeon, it will appear on your map as a purple icon with a spiderweb on it, and you will see it on the ground as you approach it. Don’t get too close, or you’ll end up springing it anyway. Once you have gotten near enough, you will be able to attempt deactivating the trap (X button on PS4, A on Xbox One and Switch, or click on the trap for PC).
Even then, it’s not a sure thing, as traps have a disarm chance that is dependent on various factors such as the character’s resolve level and any trinkets equipped. The most significant variable comes from the class that is attempting to disarm the traps. The dextrous grave robber has a native 50% chance, bounty hunters, highwaymen and hound masters possess 40%, jesters have 30%, hellions, plague doctors and shieldbreakers sit on 20%. All other classes have a 10% chance, other than the flagellant, who has the worst success rate: 0%. In fairness, his vision is a little obscured, so can you really expect him to disarm traps?
