How to Beat Sugarland Shimmy in Cuphead

Recommended Videos

Baroness Von Bon Bon, the boss of Sugarland Shimmy, may look sweet with her gingerbread house and jelly bean army, but she’s ruthless, and you’re going to have to deal with her. She’s one of Cuphead’s tougher bosses, so be prepared for a fight. The Orbit Gun is quite useful during this fight as it will remove the need to aim, allowing you to focus on moving around. Do note, however, that it does less damage than other weapons in the game.

There are really only two phases to this fight, though the first phase is randomized when it comes to who you’ll face. After taking out three of Baroness Von Bon Bon’s soldiers during Sugarland Shimmy, you’ll be able to face her directly, and that’s where things really get crazy. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

The Baroness’ Army

The first phase of the fight tasks Cuphead with defeating three of Baroness Von Bon Bon’s powerful soldiers, and they’re selected randomly. Each one requires a different approach (which we’ll detail below) so be ready to switch tactics on the fly. Also note that after killing one of them, you will have to deal with small, angry jelly beans that periodically run out of the gingerbread castle. They run in a straight line and die easily, but if you’re not careful they’ll run right into you.  Now for the soldiers:

Cupcake – This is just a jumping cupcake. When he lands he flattens into the ground and spreads his frosting. He takes up about half of the floor, so just make sure you’re a good distance from him when he lands. He’s probably the easiest to deal with, so just keep shooting while maintaining a distance.

Chocolate Bar – This is a segmented chocolate bar that consists of nine pieces, with the center being a creepy set of teeth. Every now and then it will explode, spreading chocolate up and down, left and right, and in all diagonal directions. They do have a limited distance, though, so just make sure to be at a good distance or within one of the gaps.

Gumball Machine – This one is annoying. It runs back and forth sprouting gumballs from its head (which of course damage you). Just shoot and dodge over it left and right. If you have the vanishing dash, you can dash right through this foe, continuing to pepper it with shots from either side.

Jawbreaker – It looks like Pac-Man and is the only one that follows you. Where you go, Jawbreaker will go. It also has a smaller candy that floats behind it to make dodging difficult. Just lead it in a wide circle in order to always have a spot to squeeze through as you continue to shoot it.

Once you beat three of the above, it’s time to face the Baroness herself.

Baroness Von Bon Bon

The boss fight will now turn into a moving arena. Baroness will bring her castle to life and have it chase you across the level as it shoots out giant mints for you to avoid (by standing on the one floating platform that’s moving with you). Also, the boss will toss her head at Cuphead and it will stick around for a little while. It will go to your last position and continue to move to your position for a few seconds. So keep moving as it dashes from point to point. While running just use your regular pea shooter to take out the boss.

We must note that we came across a few issues during this boss fight. One was that her head would not ever leave and act erratically (which isn’t supposed to happen). The other is that this part of the fight would go on forever no matter how much damage you did, which we could only fix by starting the whole fight over.
