Snow! Real Magic!
Best Minecraft Mods of December 2018
Ho ho ho! We’re coming off the festive season, and what kind of merry time would we have without a whole bunch of snow? Such a wicked thing is unheard of, unless you live in Miami, Hawaii, or the entirety of the southern hemisphere. So it’s a pretty small sample size, really.
“But Tony,” you mutter, waving your mittens in a huff, “Snow already exists in Minecraft! What possible need could we have for a snow-related mod?”
First off, don’t get so personal —I don’t know if we’re necessarily on a first-name basis. Second, this mod actually tinkers with the behavior of snow to make it more versatile, including potential stacking and the ability to turn water into ice. It’s real magic, dammit, and I won’t let you ruin Christmas with your negativity!
Matter Overdrive
Best Minecraft Mods of December 2018
Some mods are a lot more ambitious than others, and rarely is this quite as apparent as it is with Matter Overdrive, a mod so deluxe, you may expect to be charged a monthly fee. You totally won’t, so don’t overthink it.
Taking cues from Star Trek, this mod allows you to replicate and transform one type of matter into another. It’s a bit like alchemy, except you don’t lose a leg and your mother doesn’t come back from the dead.
Instead, you’ll get to enjoy teleportation, power generation, and even unique conversations that give the game more of an RPG feel. Basically, this mod is bursting at the seams with content, and the only missing element… is you.
Ultimate Storage
Best Minecraft Mods of December 2018
Felix the Cat had his magic bag of tricks. Hermione Granger had her undetectable extension charm. Donald Trump has his tweets. We would all love to have an inexhaustible supply of whatever we hold dearest, and now you, the enterprising Minecraft aficionado, can finally live the dream by obtaining the ultimate storage.
Coming in the form of either the ultimate chest or the ultimate bag, these whimsical storage units will hold infinite amounts of absolutely anything, whether it be your ore, your weapons or your feelings. The only thing that could possibly make this mod better would be a sales pitch from the ShamWow Guy. He would surely enjoy sticking random household objects in there.
Bountiful
Best Minecraft Mods of December 2018
From harvests to bosoms, bountiful is an adjective often associated with great wealth and prosperity. In a Minecraft context, it can now also refer to a mod that allows you to take out bounties for a reward. In fairness, it could also refer to a harvest, but not so much a bosom. We still haven’t found that mod yet, but we’re trying our best.
In this mod, then, you will discover the secrets of the wonderful bounty board. Within, it houses various bounties for you to select. Some may request you collect a particular item. Others will be looking for blood, and can be achieved by ruthlessly slaying the appropriate mob, all in the name of gold. You roguish mercenary, you.
Cosmetic Beds
Best Minecraft Mods of December 2018
Your bed is your domain. Your place of respite from the horrors of the world, where you can close your eyes peacefully, refreshed and recharged for the day ahead. It’s yours in every way except aesthetically, and that’s just not good enough. It’s time for things to go from boudoir to boudWOW. No, the last word isn’t really French.
Using the cosmetic beds mod, you’ll be able to create a design suitable of carrying you into the Land of Nod (as in the place of slumber, not the one where Cain was exiled). In actuality, it’s just a banner that you place atop a bed to give it the illusion of a new appearance, but really, isn’t that all that a blanket does, anyway?
Creatures Love Beacons
Best Minecraft Mods of December 2018
Millions of beacons, beacons for me… Millions of beacons, beacons for free!
The ultimate show of excess, beacons are dazzling displays of light that shoot directly into the sky that give potential buffs to nearby players. But what of the lowly creatures roaming down below? Are they not worthy of sharing in this glory?
It’s time to spread the wealth, and prove to the world that creatures love beacons. With this mod in action, you’ll be able to see the effects on mobs of your choosing, whether that is exclusively tamed creatures, passive creatures, or any creature that happens to be lurking in the near vicinity. That last option may lead to your grim death when you’re jumped by a hostile polar bear revved up on beacon juice, but if you’re gonna go, go out with a bang.
Apathetic Mobs
Best Minecraft Mods of December 2018
See that tiny little lamb there? Notice something that’s missing? That’s right, it’s lost its very will to live, and is just waiting to be struck down by your pickaxe/diamond sword/tasty sandwich.
Anxiety in gaming is quite common, and it can be aroused by the urge to see something that is potentially dangerous, without actually intending to ever engage the threat in a manner that could prove fatal. None of us like to feel weak, after all, and there’s little more degrading than ending up wedged between the gnashing teeth of the wither.
Using the apathetic mobs mod, then, will give you the ultimate feeling of empowerment, as you approach the fiercest of beasts and unleash hell upon them. It won’t fight back, it won’t even try to resist. It’ll just sustain punishment until its miserable demise, allowing you to stand tall over its fallen body like the invincible god you are.
Goblin Encounters
Best Minecraft Mods of December 2018
Thanks to visionaries like J.R.R. Tolkien and Good ol’ JR Jim Ross, the world of fantasy is littered with millions of fictional beasts like trolls, orcs and Hosses.
If you’d like to inject a little bit more of that into your Minecraft experience, look no further than the Goblin Encounters mod. They come in different varieties, from grunts to monks and everything in between, each with their own unique behaviors and quirks. Some of them really hate bats, for example, potentially because they’re Harley Quinn fanboys.
You’ll also come across various goblin-related structures and dwellings that you can invade in search of treasure and genocide. Beware, however, for goblins may not be a threat on their own, but when they form a pack…
No Poles
Best Minecraft Mods of December 2018
Picture this: you’ve just erected a tower of the most elegant extravagance. It’s riddled with stairways, columns and pillars, not a single block out of place. Hours and hours invested into your chef-d’œuvre, a gift to the world of Minecraft that the peons should feel blessed to even gaze upon.
Then there’s that jerkass, Nathan. He built a pole. It looks garish and obtuse, but him and his friends find it funny because it resembles a penis. Great job, pal.
It’s a crime against art and humanity that it should be within even striking distance of your marvelous tower, and that’s why you need to implement the no poles mod, preventing single-block structures from being built. …Take that, Nathan!
Hammer Tools
Best Minecraft Mods of December 2018
At its core, Minecraft is a game that is about mining and crafting. If you hadn’t quite figured that out, you might be best served playing something else, instead.
Because of this, add-ons that make resource gathering easier are often among the most coveted (over, say, last month’s suggestion of a mod that makes an ‘oof’ sound when you die). With the Hammer Tools mod, you’ll be the lucky recipient of a hammer that digs in a 3×3 area, as well as super axes to assist in your wood-collecting endeavors.
As an aside, if you ever intend on making a mod of your own, for the love of god, make sure you add an image to go with it. Otherwise we end up relying on pictures of MC Hammer for a cheap laugh, and I’m pretty sure that I’m the only one who finds it even vaguely funny.
