This is done by constructing a Throne Room, a room decked out in ever-escalating opulence to increase your social standing.

As you play, you will receive quests tied to the Royalty DLC, which will see important persons visiting your colony, and if you can satisfy their expectations, you will be rewarded with the next rank up. The secret to success here is constructing an adaptable Throne Room that can be improved upon as and when you need to.

It is best to construct this room apart from your more utilitarian spaces. After all, there is nothing regal about your servants eating and sleeping in your grand receiving hall.
