The long-anticipated first trailer of the Super Mario Bros. Movie was shown off today at New York Comic-Con and via Nintendo Direct for the world to see. Fans around the world had…lots of thoughts.
The general consensus seems to be that the trailer for the movie itself looks great, from the visuals and plot to the voices of most of the characters. Not everyone seems to be sold on Chris Pratt’s voice for Mario, though.
Here are many of the reactions that have been popping up on Twitter after the reveal of the Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer that capture all the emotions we’re going through, starting with reactions to Pratt as Mario.
We have a feeling we’ll be seeing this image of Mario in pain as a reaction image for many years to come. It’s first usage, a reaction to Pratt’s voice as Mario, is very fitting.
Remember the outrage when Sonic the Hedgehog’s design was initially revealed for his movie? 9Volt may be joking about bullying Pratt into re-recording his lines, but you never know if it could actually work…
Most fans seem to be in agreement that the majority of the trailer looked fantastic and that it’s really just Mario’s voice that sounded a bit off. That being said, it doesn’t seem like it will ruin the movie for most people.
This one is such a brutal insult, but it’s totally accurate. We aren’t sure what we were expecting when we imagined Chris Pratt doing an Italian accent for Mario, but it certainly wasn’t what we heard today.
Other fans pointed out that Chris Pratt said he was working hard to get the voice right for Mario only for us to hear what sounded like his normal voice. What exactly was he practicing?
Yikes! Sounds like some people were so invested in Mario’s voice for this movie that their emotions spilled over into the workplace. Wishing all the best to Alex’s coworker in these trying times.
Moving on from opinions on Pratt’s voice, it’s clear that longtime Mario fans are very happy with what they saw today. After the last attempt at a Mario movie in the 90s went wrong, this is a big relief.
We wonder how many Easter Eggs and references to Super Mario games there will be in this movie. Surely none of the penguins will be harmed in the making of this film, right?
Other fans are creating hilarious edits of the trailer. Check out the one above of how the movie would look if it was inspired by Super Mario 64.
In Chris Pratt’s interview before the trailer, he claimed to be a Super Mario fan his whole life but then struggled to think of the name of an enemy in the game. Not every fan is convinced about how genuine he is in this role.
On the other hand, fans seem to be unanimously in love with Jack Black’s portrayal of Bowser. He seems to fit the part remarkably well and is truly a national treasure.
Again, Bowser stole the show for many fans in this trailer and likely will in the full movie. We need to see more of his performance as soon as possible.
