Melissanthi Mahut as Kassandra – Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
The Assassin’s Creed series has a number of charming and likable protagonists, but Kassandra in Assassin’s Creedy Odyssey makes a strong case for being the very best one. Kassandra is a misthios, or mercenary, living on the island of Kephallonia. She has a much greater destiny, however, as players soon find out.
Kassandra’s life as a mercenary has made her headstrong and brash, but she has an incredibly quick wit and isn’t afraid to call out stupidity when she sees it.
Kassandra is absolutely charming, and Melissanthi Mahut’s performance is a big part of that. Mahut’s delivery is spot on, and so many of her lines are laugh-out-loud hilarious.
The degree of choice Assassin’s Creed Odyssey gives you also allows players to decide what kind of person they want Kassandra to be: whether that’s the cold and ruthless mercenary, or the one always trying to look out for the common people.
Kassandra is one of the best things to happen to Assassin’s Creed in years, and Mahut should definitely be lauded for her strong performance.

Lucy Black as Meve – Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales
The Witcher series is no stranger to fantastic characters and strong voice performances, but Thronebreaker is something truly impressive, especially as a single player campaign to Gwent. The story revolves around Meve, Queen of Lyria and Rivia, as her lands are invaded and taken over by Nilfgaard forces.
The fascinating thing about Meve is we’re not seeing her growth into becoming queen, she’s already a strong and righteous queen, unjustly ousted from her throne. She’s an incredibly strong protagonist, and a stellar voice performance by Lucy Black helps solidify that even more.
Meve has a strong, demanding personality and she’s absolutely unflinching in her quest to take back her kingdom. Black consistently lends an air of gravitas to Meve, and as the story changes her character and hardens her, that change is represented in the voice.
There’s a ton of voiced dialogue in Thronebreaker, and Meve is consistently at the top of the pack in terms of quality.

Liam Garrigan as Gascon – Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales
While Meve is certainly the standout performance of Thronebreaker, she’s supported by a whole cast of fascinating characters. Gascon is one of Meve’s right-hand men, and he’s easily the most interesting of all the party members that join you.
A ruthless bandit by trade, Gascon is forced into service by Meve when she easily routes his group.
Gascon is initially antagonistic, but he eventually comes to respect Meve, and he’s a much deeper character than he initially appears. The bandit has a complex past, and Liam Garrigan does a great job of fleshing the character out.
Gascon’s thick accent is perfect for the setting of Thronebreaker, and Garrigan does a fantastic job of making the character sound shifty and slimy. As much as you may want to trust Gascon, it always feels like you never really know what he’s up to.

Orion Acaba as Rico Rodriguez – Just Cause 4
Just Cause 4 is the first time Orion Acaba has ever voiced Rico Rodriguez, taking over the role from the previous actor, Kevin Collins. Despite that, he feels like a natural in the role, filling Rico with all the swagger and overconfidence you’d expect.
This time around, Rico is once again taking on the Black Hand, looking for evidence of how his father was working with the mercenary group. Everything fans know about Rico is still the same: he’s still cocky, loud, and sarcastic.
However, at the same time, the protagonist feels more mature and weathered, and has more of a defined personality rather than just being a blank slate for the player.
Acaba feels like a fantastic fit for Rico, providing a bit more depth and emotion to the character than what we’ve seen before. His accent is also spot-on, making this feel like the most genuine version of the character we’ve seen yet.

Roger Clark as Arthur Morgan – Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption 2 was one of the most eagerly anticipated sequels of all time, but the biggest unknown before its release was whether or not the new protagonist, Arthur Morgan, could live up to the lofty heights set by John Marston. Luckily, the answer to that is a resounding yes.
In fact, Arthur is by far a more likable and well-rounded character than John. A senior member of the Dutch Van Der Linde Gang, Arthur is a gruff-and-tough cowboy.
Deep down though there’s a kindness to Arthur, a desire to make the world a better place, and this manifests itself more and more throughout the game.
Roger Clark does an incredible job of portraying Arthur, both the highs and lows. He helps the cowboy be funny and charming one second, and dark and terrifying the next. This unique performance only gets better later on as the gang, and Arthur himself, begin breaking down.
Clark’s performance feels like a once in a lifetime one, and recognition has already rolled in, like the actor winning best performance at The Game Awards 2018. It’s undoubtedly one of the finest performances of a character in video game history.

Benjamin Byron Davis as Dutch Van Der Linde – Red Dead Redemption 2
Benjamin Byron Davis already gave a good performance as Dutch in the first Red Dead Redemption, but he really goes above and beyond with the character in the second game.
Seeing Dutch in his prime sure is a sight, before he fell into the villain we know him to be in the first game. Davis’ makes Dutch an incredibly charismatic character, one that could easily inspire the loyalty of people like Arthur and John.
Dutch certainly doesn’t seem like a bad guy at the start of the game, but he has a fascinating character arc that lets us see him literally unravel as a person.
As things go from bad to worse, Davis consistently delivers a riveting, emotional performance. While Arthur may be the main character, Red Dead Redemption II is just as much a story about Dutch and the other gang members, and Dutch makes the perfect sympathetic villain for that story.
