Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (Release Date: Oct. 5)

People were blown away by Assassin’s Creed Origins, so expectations are high for the next title in the storied franchise. Enter Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, an open world title set in Ancient Greece before the events that led to the founding of the Assassins.

In it, players take the role of Kassandra or Alexios, the sole survivors of an attack on their village that leads them on a journey of vengeance and discovery. Along the way, they’ll engage in all of the series’ trademark climbing, stealth missions, and close combat encounters. That isn’t all the game offers though; on top of the usual fare, Odyssey has brought together elements that are new and from past installments to further expand the scope of what you can do.

Naval travel and combat allow you to sail the seas in search of lost civilizations, dialogue choices allow you to craft your own narrative and work towards your own ending, and the new game plus mode keeps the game fresh with a chance to experience every possible outcome the title offers. It’s an entry that shouldn’t be missed, and for more proof, check out our full review.

Soul Calibur VI (Release Date: Oct. 19)

assassin's creed odyssey, best ps4 games, october 2018, have on your radar. soulcalibur vi

It’s been a while since the Soul Calibur franchise has seen a release, and it’s been even longer since fans were satisfied with the direction the series was headed in. This looks to change with the release of Soul Calibur VI, the series’ next entry and a soft reboot of the franchise’s story and characters. While the plot remains largely the same – several warriors are drawn together in their pursuit of the legendary Soul Edge and must duke it out to claim ownership – it has also set the clock back so that the events of the previous games will be rewritten. As a result, characters from across the series’ lineage will confront each other in a new clash for power, free of the convoluted chain of events from past entries while still nodding to it through the game’s roster.

Amid these changes though, other elements have remained the same: Combat is still tight and easy to pick up, and the game will feature a guest character from another franchise, Geralt of Rivia, the protagonist of The Witcher RPG series. It was a long time coming, but fans won’t want to miss this promising return.

Super Mario Party (Release Date: Oct. 5)

nintendo switch game releases for october 2018, best nintendo switch games

It’s easy to pass the Mario Party series off as a cash grab for Nintendo, and those that do aren’t entirely wrong. A hodgepodge of different mini games thrown at the player in the guise of a board game featuring mainstays in the Mario franchise, it does have the feeling of something that wouldn’t exist without its fan appeal. And yet, to do so would deny the fun it can bring when you have a group of people to play with. Playing through the strange array of mini games as your favorite character from the Mario universe, and spending time with friends, arguing about who lucked out more with their roles, is a blast, and a simple multiplayer experience like it is a welcome addition to the Nintendo Switch.

That’s to say nothing of Super Mario Party’s biggest new addition. Just in time for the launch of Nintendo’s full online functionality support, the game will allow players to infuriate each other online for the first time in the series. The options for irritating each other have been expanded exponentially as a result, and if you need a game to bring you and your friends together this fall, few could do a better job than this party game.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 (Oct. 12)

Call of Duty has been the go-to franchise for online multiplayer shooters for a long time now, but as the years have gone on, more and more competitors have appeared who are eager to take its throne. As such, it’s little surprise that the series has started to adapt and switch up its formula to put these challengers in their place. This is no clearer than in its newest title, Black Ops 4, which does away with a single player experience entirely, in order to focus on its new battle royale mode.

While this may ruffle the feathers of some, it’s undeniable that it’s a sensible pairing. Not only does it still offer the tight, refined and adrenaline pumping gameplay one expects from Call of Duty, but its battle royale mode is just as impressive, with increasingly claustrophobic arenas, frantic assaults on enemy encampments, and a plethora of possible tactics to come out on top as the only survivor. Change isn’t a bad thing, and with any luck, Black Ops 4 could come to exemplify this idea.

Red Dead Redemption 2 (Release Date: Oct. 26)

best ps4 games, october 2018, have on your radar, red dead redemption ii

Between Rockstar’s pedigree as a top of the line developer and the wide spread acclaim the first Red Dead Redemption received, there’s little wonder why there’s so much hype behind Red Dead Redemption 2. Likewise, from what’s been revealed and shown of the game so far, there’s little room for doubt that it won’t be a contender for one of the best games of the year.

A prequel to its predecessor, it tells the tale of Dutch, a villain from the first game and leader of a gang of ruthless outlaws in the final years of the wild west. Full of sweeping western vistas, tense shootouts with the authorities, and characters as complex as the reasons they have for being what they are, it’s on track to be a masterpiece on par with the best of what Rockstar has set itself apart with in the past. If you’re a fan of their work, or just a fan of games in general, there’s little doubt this is the title to keep on your radar.
