It’s easy to say that each new generation is the greatest of all time, but this generation has the accolades to back it up. From titles that proved to be saving graces for their developers and publishers to new IPs that blew the doors off of the industry with its success, there’s been no end to the number of titles that have broken records and made this a year for the record books. 5 Games That Broke Sales Records This Generation
Monster Hunter World
The latest entry in the long-running Monster Hunter series, Monster Hunter World broke new ground by allowing players to team up with one another from around the world for a crisp, clear and adrenaline-packed sojourn into the monster-filled New World.
The game proved a hit not only in Japan, but across the world, and within only two months of its release it managed to blow past developer Capcom’s expectations and sell over 7.5 million copies, breaking the company’s record for best selling title of all time. Not only that, but the game’s success helped Capcom to its highest stock value since 2001, bringing the company out of a slump it has been working to escape from over the course of this console generation.

God of War
The latest iteration in the God of War franchise made waves among fans and critics alike for its bold new take on the character, dropping him into a world of Norse mythology with a son to raise and new foes to take on in brutal, bloody fashion. It was one of the most highly anticipated releases of 2018, and when it hit store shelves on April 20, consumers snatched it up in record numbers.
Not only did it exceed publisher Sony’s expectations, but it managed to sell over 3.1 million units in its first three days of availability, making it the fastest selling PlayStation 4 title of all time. The game continued to sell an exemplary amount after this feat as well, with the total sales in its first month alone calculated at over 5 million.

Spider-Man
Insomniac’s take on the iconic superhero has been well met by most everyone who plays it. Not only does it fully realize Spider-Man, his rogue’s gallery and the city he calls home, but it allows players to delve into the history of the character with a variety of suits to choose from and plenty of small references to key moments from the comics, films and even other games.
It’s no surprise, then, that the game has smashed records left and right in the few weeks since its release, rising to the top of the list for fastest-selling Marvel games of all time within only three days. There’s still no telling how many more records this game can topple, but this early accomplishment seems to indicate it’s still got plenty more to accomplish before it’s done.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Of the many properties owned by Nintendo which are held in the highest of regard, The Legend of Zelda is easily one of the most treasured. From the very first entry in the series to entries from the Nintendo 64 and Gamecube days, each is considered a masterpiece by at least some portion of the gaming community, and as such each has seen hefty sales numbers to match their renown.
It came as a surprise though, when the long-time king of Zelda game sales Ocarina of Time was recently dethroned as the best selling title of all time in Japan by the recent Nintendo Switch game Breath of the Wild. It marked the end of an era, but considering the wide acclaim Breath of the wild has continued to see since its launch, it also signaled the start of an equally impressive one.

Pokémon Sun and Moon
As one of the most valuable properties in the world, the Pokémon franchise is no stranger to record-breaking sales. It did come as a surprise, however, when the latest entries in the series, Sun and Moon, smashed past expectations to become the biggest launch in the series’ history back in 2016. Within the first month alone, the game’s tropical region and new takes on some of the series’ classic monsters drew in enough players to sell 3.7 million units, blitzing past the original record holders Black and White. Not only that, but it continued to sell impressively for a current grand total of 16.12 million copies, currently resting in the number three slot for best selling 3DS titles of all time.
