From Software
It’s no mystery that the Nintendo Switch is going to want third party support, something the Wii U was desperately lacking. Prior to their unveiling event, Nintendo showed off a sizable list of third party developers that were pledging support to the new system. A handful of these developers, however, have been surprisingly quiet, even with some big games coming down the road. Recent reports of certain titles getting downgraded on the system, like Dragon Quest Heroes II, could certainly have some effect on the matter. That in mind, let’s take a look at some developers that haven’t really said much about making games for the Switch, whether they’ve already been confirmed for support or not.
From Software, the makers of the wildly popular Dark Souls series, is a big name to have pledging support. They were on Nintendo’s list of confirmed developers, but so far we’ve yet to see any indication that they’re making titles for the Switch. From has said that Dark Souls III will be the last title in the series, but we also found out last September that the studio is working on three new titles, including a new Armored Core.
At the very least, you’d think Nintendo or From Software could come out with a statement saying one of these new games is coming to the Switch. There are also rumors that Dark Souls III and a remaster of the first two games could be making their way to Nintendo’s new system. Though these rumors may not be true, that certainly would be a great piece of software for the Switch.
From has become one of the most highly acclaimed developers in recent years, and hopefully they’ll announce something soon in regards to Switch support. It would be a nice feather in the cap for Nintendo’s new system.
Telltale Games
Telltale Games always has multiple projects in the works, and they’ve also been confirmed for supporting the Nintendo Switch. What’s confusing, then, is that we haven’t seen or heard of any of Telltale’s games coming to the system. The studio has so many recent projects that could be ported over, including Minecraft: Story Mode, Batman, Tales from the Borderlands, and more. This isn’t even to mention the new season of The Walking Dead, which just started last month, and their Guardians of the Galaxy game coming later this year.
It seems like The Walking Dead could have been a nice title to have for the Switch on launch day, as Telltale is always dedicated to bringing their games to multiple platforms. Maybe there wasn’t enough time for the studio to get used to the new hardware, but it is still surprising that we don’t have any Telltale titles absolutely confirmed for the Switch. Hopefully, the upcoming series the studio has in the works can be added to Nintendo’s lineup, or maybe we could even see something exclusive to the Switch?
Spike Chunsoft
Spike Chunsoft is yet another developer who’s been confirmed for Switch support, but hasn’t announced any titles coming to the system. One thing to keep in mind is that many of Spike Chunsoft’s titles are published by other companies in the West, like Aksys publishing Zero Time Dilemma and NIS publishing Danganronpa V3. Regardless, even looking at the Japanese site for the Switch doesn’t show any recent or upcoming titles from Chunsoft.
With its portable nature, the Switch would be a perfect fit for many of the studio, especially considering their strange Danganronpa series. Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony just released in Japan on January 12, with a western release coming later this year. Other recent releases like Zero Time Dilemma and Exist Archive could also be ported to the Switch, helping to round out the lineup of third party games. Yet, we have’t seen mention of what the studio might have planned for the new system.
It’s important for Nintendo to have the support of third party developers, both in Japan and the West. Hopefully, studios like Spike Chunsoft will start having things for Nintendo fans to look forward to.
WB Games
WB Games does have at least one game confirmed for the Switch so far, Lego City Undercover. The catch here, is that Undercover already released back on the Wii U years ago. It may be a slightly upgraded version, visually, but it’s essentially the same game Nintendo fans have had access to for years. It’s incredibly surprising that we don’t know of any more titles coming from WB, especially new titles.
The publisher has some notable titles coming in the future, particularly Lego Worlds and Injustice 2. Lego Worlds is the obvious fit for the Switch, as it’s an open world sandbox game that lets you construct buildings in a procedurally generated world. It sounds very similar to Minecraft, and is something that would definitely appeal to the family friendly focus Nintendo has. It’s already coming to PS4, PC, and Xbox One in February, so it seems strange that we wouldn’t even get announcement of it coming to Switch.
On the other hand, you have one of the biggest fighting titles of the year with Injustice 2, which was just confirmed for a May 16 release date. Injustice would be a monumental title to get on launch day for the Switch, as the system is hurting for titles in late Spring/Summer right now.
In our Dreams: Rockstar Games
Alright, Rockstar Games hasn’t been confirmed for supporting the Switch, but you couldn’t hope for a bigger third party developer. If Nintendo could gain the support of the studio, it’d be a huge win for their new platform. Rockstar doesn’t exactly fit the family friendly idea that Nintendo strives for, but with titles like Skyrim and No More Heroes on the way, it seems like Nintendo is focused on providing engaging experiences for all age ranges.
Grand Theft Auto V, one of the best selling games ever made, would make for a fantastic Switch port, especially considering GTA Online is still getting updates. More importantly, however, is what Rockstar has coming up. Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the most highly anticipated games of 2017, and it’s already looking impressive from just the teaser trailer. We don’t know how graphically intensive it is yet, however, something that could definitely factor into its Switch compatibility.
The list of companies supporting Nintendo is impressive, yes, but we really need to see them deliver. Nintendo can’t just be complacent with what they have either, they need to be constantly appealing to big developers like Rockstar to try and bring their software over to the Switch. If Nintendo really wants a strong showing for third party support, they’ll need to have titles like Red Dead Redemption 2 confirmed and on the way.
