Dead Cells (Aug. 7)

Best Xbox One Games of August 2018

Dead Cells isn’t an entirely new game so to speak. It’s been on Steam via Early Access for quite a while, but is finally seeing its full release on Xbox One, PS4, and PC on Aug. 7. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the title, let’s give you a brief overview. This is a roguelite with Metroidvania elements that sees you explore environments, learning new abilities, and returning back to areas you previously traversed in order to access previously unreachable areas. The official site for the game acknowledges Castlevania as an inspiration, and it’s clear to see that inspiration oozing out of every screenshot of Dead Cells.

Dead Cells has been likened to Dark Souls, thanks to its tough enemies (and even tougher boss battles), varied weapons, and how this comes together to offer a challenging but fair combat system. If you’re looking for something a little different on your Xbox One for the month of August, this is certainly a title worth checking out.

Overcooked 2 (Aug. 7)

Best Xbox One Games of August 2018

overcooked 2

Overcooked was the co-op game that nobody really realized they wanted until they played it. The chaos that ensues as you and three other friends try and serve up food as fast as possible to maximize tips, all the while navigating kitchens that are definitely less-than-ideal workplaces, is quite unlike anything else you’ve experienced. The only downside to all this frantic action was that, as much as we appreciated having a local co-op option, there was no online play.

Skip forward a couple years and here we are, eagerly anticipating the release of Overcooked 2. Not only do we get a bunch of new ‘dynamic’ kitchens that change up on the fly as you complete orders, you’ll also have the ability to toss items and foods at your fellow chefs. Oh, and this time, there is online co-op alongside the local option, so you’ll never be in the kitchen on your own ever again!

We Happy Few (Aug. 10)

Best Xbox One Games of August 2018

we happy few

We Happy Few has been on our radar for quite some time. Despite it feeling a little too open-ended when it first released in Early Access on Steam and Xbox One, the game has since come on strength from strength, refining the experience into something that’s a little more approachable. Well, as approachable as an alternative version of WWII where a hallucinogenic drug known as Joy keeps citizens unaware of the horrific truths of their everyday lives can be, anyway.

Following the stories of three characters, players will need to find their way out of Wellington Wells, all the while uncovering the truth behind the locale, its inhabitants, and Joy. With a world that’s equal parts charming and unsettling, a procedurally generated world that makes each experience unique, and a pretty novel concept, we can’t wait to dive into We Happy Few once it releases on Aug. 10.

Telltale’s The Walking Dead: The Final Season – Episode 1 (Aug. 14)

Best Xbox One Games of August 2018

The Walking Dead has been a bit of a cultural phenomenon for a few years now. The TV show has captured the attention of millions, we’ve seen countless games, spin-off TV shows, and of course the comic book series is still adored by many. Telltale’s The Walking Dead is one of the finest takes on the property, offering heart-wrenching moments (we all know that season one scene I’m talking about), tough decisions, and some equally exciting action-packed QTEs to up the ante when necessary.

Alas, everything must come to an end, and Telltale’s The Walking Dead is no different. The Final Season will follow the story of Clementine who is now even older than she was in season three, and may seemingly be in charge of a settlement of her own. With the story finally coming to an end, we wouldn’t be surprised if the decisions were even more significant and difficult to make in this season. And with Season one’s writer Gary Whitta back on board as a story consultant, there’s plenty of promise that the series will end on the high note that it deserves.

Shenmue 1 & 2 (Aug. 21)

Best Xbox One Games of August 2018

Shenmue I & II

Depending on who you talk to about Shenmue, you’ll either be greeted with a puzzled “huh?” or a “YAAAAAAAS.” It’s another one of those series that has an incredibly passionate fan base, but is also somewhat unknown by the more mainstream audience. Well, that’s why Shenmue 1 and 2 are both making a comeback on Aug. 21 on Xbox One, PC, and PS4.

For those of you who’d fall into the “huh?” category, let’s give you the gist. You’ll take on the role of Ryo Hazuki as he goes out to avenge his father’s death and track down the man responsible for his murder. You’ll need to use Ryo’s jujitsu skills, investigating prowess, and generally be pretty awesome at Quick Time Events (QTEs) and other mini games, too.

The Shenmue titles were so revolutionary for their time due to the fact that they essentially popularized the use of QTEs, they had a day/night cycle, and if you needed to figure out where something was, you literally had to ask the NPCs. No giant all-knowing GPS line on your screen to guide you there. Just good ol’ fashioned chin wagging.

Shenmue 1 and 2 likely will feel dated now, despite being remastered, but if you’ve never played them before or are interested in checking out Shenmue 3 whenever that releases, now’s a good time for a refresher.
