Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition (Jan. 11)

nintendo switch, game releases, january 2019

2019 will be starting off right with the release of Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition on Switch. This game is arguably the best entry in the entire Tales series, thanks in no small part to its lovable cast of characters and great story and setting.

The release of Definitive Edition also marks the first time all of the game’s additional story content will be coming stateside, and on a console that isn’t the Xbox 360. Whether you’re a longtime fan or a newcomer to the series, there’s plenty to look forward to in Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition.

Alongside the slightly improved graphics, the series’ trademark linear motion battle system also makes a return, and it’s a fantastic fast-paced action combat system that will keep you engaged for hours on end. The Switch is quickly cementing its place as a portable JRPG machine, and this is one of the best Switch games to keep an eye out for if you’re a JRPG fan.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (Jan. 11)

If JRPGs aren’t your thing, and you missed out on the Wii U when it originally launched, Nintendo is also releasing an updated port of New Super Mario Bros. U for the Switch.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe includes both New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Luigi U, so there’s plenty of content to dig into here. This is a platforming game with simple and intuitive controls, making it one of the more accessible entries to get into. It’s great as a single-player game, but it also features multiplayer support where you can clear levels together with a friend while trying to save the Mushroom Kingdom once again.

There are over 100 levels to tackle here, and there are also additional game modes to check out if you’re looking for some variety.

Onimusha: Warlords (Jan. 15)

Onimusha Warlords

Onimusha: Warlords is the very first entry of Capcom’s popular action-adventure series, and it’s now being ported to the Nintendo Switch.

Players will take control of protagonist Samanosuke Akechi in his quest to defeat demons. The game features a fixed camera and pre-rendered backgrounds, and aside from just hacking and slashing away at enemies, players will also have to solve the occasional environmental puzzle in order to progress.

Aside from the starting katana, there are a variety of weapons to obtain throughout the course of your playthrough as well, along with different elemental attacks you can employ.

Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes (Jan. 18)

best switch games

Possibly one of the most highly anticipated releases for January 2019, Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes marks the return of Travis Touchdown, and his debut on the Nintendo Switch.

It’s worth noting that series creator Suda51 does not consider this game to be a direct continuation of No More Heroes 2, even though it’s still very much a core part of that series. This entry will see Travis Touchdown facing off against Badman, the father of an assassin Travis had killed previously.

Both characters are then drawn into a video game console, where they must battle through each game to come back out alive.

Those are our picks for the best Switch games to keep an eye out for in January 2019. Do you have any other games you’re looking forward to? Let us know in the comments down below.
