The Best New Games For The Week of July 16, 2018

Recommended Videos

This week is very, very light when it comes to new game releases. That is pretty normal for the middle of the summer. If anything, we’ve been spoiled a bit early on with great games like Octopath Traveler, Mario Tennis Aces, Onrush, Sushi Striker, and Vampyr all releasing recently. Alas, we’re getting a cold dose of summer gaming reality this week with only one game that we feel is worth mentioning. That said, it is a good one!

Sonic Mania Plus

Sonic Mania Plus highlights our best games for this week. In fact, it’s the only game on our list! Sonic Mania Plus is an enhanced version of Sonic Mania, which released to critical acclaim last summer. It was our game of the month for August 2017, and we scored it a 5 out of 5, believing it to be the best Sonic game ever made. It builds on what was accomplished with Sonic 3 & Knuckles many years ago, and finally elevates the 2D games to a new level.

Sonic Mania Plus, isn’t a new game entirely, but more of an expansion instead. It features two new characters that you can play through any of the game mods with: Mighty the Armadillo, and Ray the Flying Squirrel, both of which are best known for their appearance in SegaSonic the Hedgehog. Mighty can crash down to the ground at high speeds, breaking obstacles and clearing out enemies. Ray, can glide around (similar to the cape from Super Mario World), and skip over large sections of a zone if you’re skilled with it.

Also, there is a new feature called Encore Mode, where you can play through a remixed version of the original campaign with the ability to use all five characters in the same game file. For a full list of features and our impressions, check out our review of Sonic Mania Plus. But in short, if you’re a fan of 2D Sonic games, or have a lot of hours in the original Sonic Mania, grabbing the expanded Plus version is a no brainer.

That does it for the best new games for the week of July 16, 2018. If you end up grabbing Sonic, enjoy! If not, hopefully next week is a better haul.
