Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
Best Multiplayer Games of Q2 2018
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze can be brutal, especially if you’re not great at platforming games. However, the Switch version of the game adds in a brand new Funky Mode that gives you more hearts, so you have a better chance of making it through the game’s tougher levels. If you need even more assistance, the game can also be played in local co-op and multiplayer. One person can take control of Funky, while the other can be either Diddy, Cranky, or Dixie.
Alternatively, if you’d rather brave the game’s regular mode, instead of Funky Mode, local multiplayer is available there as well. It’ll take quite a bit of communication and coordination between both players, as one leaving the other behind can spell death and the unnecessary loss of extra hearts.
Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition
Best Multiplayer Games of Q2 2018
Like every other Warriors or Musou game ever made, Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition is, without a doubt, one of the very best multiplayer games we got to check out in Q2 2018. The game features an extensive cast of characters from all over the Zelda timeline, and you can team up with a friend to go through a level, take over keeps together, and just hack and slash your way through the multitude of opponents on the battlefield.
Hyrule Warriors also features some of the best boss fights we’ve seen in a Musou game, and most of them are sort of like mini puzzles where you have to figure out their patterns and weaknesses, and exploit them to win the battle. The Switch version comes packed with all the previously released DLC, which means there’s a serious ton of content to sink into here.
State of Decay 2
Best Multiplayer Games of Q2 2018
While the game isn’t exactly free of bugs and glitches, State of Decay 2 is pretty much perfect for fans who adored the first game and want even more of it. State of Decay 2 allows you to team up with three other friends, as you wander around the wasteland scavenging for resources, looking for survivors to add to your community, and destroying the various Plague Hearts.
State of Decay 2 is a great solo experience as it can really add to the tension, but when you need just a little bit more help in clearing out the zombie hordes, playing through the game with friends can be a blast.
Dark Souls Remastered
Best Multiplayer Games of Q2 2018
Dark Souls Remastered is an enhanced port of From Software’s classic action RPG, and it looks better than ever on consoles with 4K visuals and 60 frames per second. Even if you’ve played through the PC port with the DSfix mod, the frame rate in the port definitely isn’t as stable or as smooth as the remastered version. The game also comes with better online multiplayer support so that more players can join in on a single session, whether you’re playing in co-op or engaging in some PvP.
If you haven’t played any of the Souls games, this is a great time to jump in. Dark Souls Remastered features some of the best online multiplayer mechanics where players can invade your game as a red phantom, or be summoned as white phantoms to help you with tougher areas. And don’t even get us started on the Gravelord covenant.
Unravel Two
Best Multiplayer Games of Q2 2018
This one was a bit of a surprise release when it first got unveiled at EA’s press conference during E3 earlier this year. Unravel Two brings the adorable Yarny back into the spotlight, except this time, you get to go through a new puzzle adventure with a friend. It’s worth noting that this game only supports local co-op and multiplayer, so you won’t be able to play with friends or strangers online. The couch co-op aspect is great for the game though, as you and your partner will have to work together to solve environmental puzzles in order to progress.
While you can play through the whole game solo, it’s a lot more enjoyable with someone else taking on the mantle of the blue Yarny.
Mario Tennis Aces
Best Multiplayer Games of Q2 2018
Mario Tennis Aces is probably one of the best multiplayer games you can play on the Switch right now. Outside of the story-based Adventure Mode, you can play locally with up to three other friends, or take your skills online. Local multiplayer has support for both singles and doubles matches, and you can also play in Swing Mode, where you have to literally swing the Joy-Con like you would a tennis racket.
If you want to play online, you can either match up alone with other players in singles or doubles matches, or create a room that three other people on your friends list can join. You can also team up with a friend and look for doubles matches with other people online. Mario Tennis Aces features a solid cast of characters, all with their own unique Zone and Trick Shots to master.
