Best Free Switch Games You Can Download Right Now

This article is over 6 years old and may contain outdated information

It can be hard to keep up with all of the new video game releases out there when you’re strapped for cash. Luckily, there are a bunch of free games on the Switch that you can download right now that are actually quite fun and may go on to become one of your favorites. Here are the best free Switch games to check out on the eShop:

Smite

Smite is a free to play MOBA that lets you literally play as mythical gods and is very approachable for anybody that may be new to the genre. It’s a great alternative if you feel like other PC MOBAs are hard to jump into without someone helping you along the way.

It tweaks the formula that we’re all well aware of and brings in a more action-oriented combat system that allows you to unleash devastating attacks and destroy the other powerful gods.

Ever wanted to fight Medusa as Thor? Well, you should play Smite –you also don’t need Switch Online to play it.

Pokemon Quest

Pokemon Quest is a cute, Minecraft-esque free to play Pokemon game that, while surprisingly deep, maybe a bit too grindy for some people who aren’t used to doing the same tasks over and over again to get strong Pokemon.

Despite its flaws though, it’s still quite difficult to put down and collecting all of the original 151 Pokemon all over again is still really satisfying.

It’s easy to pick up and play for pretty much any type of player, regardless of experience, especially thanks to an auto-fight button that gets the job done for you.

It also does a good job of letting you enjoy the game without tapping on your shoulder and asking you for money. It’s one of the better mobile Pokemon games out there with plenty of fun to be had with little to no cost of entry.

Brawlhalla

free switch games

If you happen to be in the market for a Super Smash Bros. game on Switch but are lacking in funds at the moment, Brawlalla might be a good alternative for you.

It’s a 2D brawler that requires players to knock each other off of the stage by dealing combos and special attacks — sound familiar?

Its controls aren’t the best and can feel sort of wonky at times, but you get what you pay for I guess.

Color Zen

There are no scores or penalties when you fail in this relaxing puzzle game called Color Zen. Throw on some headphones and get ready to be whisked away to a state of maximum relaxation.

This super minimalistic color-based puzzle game has a groovy soundtrack to keep you in the experience and there are tons of levels to complete; there’s even DLC available to purchase if you find yourself wanting more from this experience on Switch.

Warframe

Warframe is another free to play multiplayer online title that comes from the dev team over at Digital Extremes. It borrows elements from other sci-fi shooters such as Destiny and brings it into the free to play realm.

It’s extremely customizable with over 300 diverse weapons, the combat is super fast-paced, letting you use projectiles as well as melee weapons like swords and katanas.

Go out there and play with up to three friends and explore some weird alien space planets.

Fortnite

fortnite

Fortnite is probably the biggest video game out there right now, being extremely popular with streamers, children, and people who enjoy the zaniness of the battle royale genre.

Fortnite has always been free to play, but now that it’s on Switch, you can play it on the go for the first time on an actual console –sorry mobile gamers.

Epic Games continues to update this title with fun events and patches that bring wacky things into the shooter, stuff like this epic giant robot kaiju battle. As far as free Switch games go, this is definitely the most popular one.

Fallout Shelter

fallout shelter

Fallout Shelter first came to mobile devices as a free to play title based off the massive open world RPG series.

Instead of exploring a barren wasteland after a devastating apocalyptic event, you are instead tasked with building a perfect shelter and making sure that all of your dwellers are happy and satisfied.

If you like filling up bars, completing tasks, and customizing the looks of characters, then this vault-building, free to play title might be just for you.

The Pinball Arcade

free switch games to download

Have you ever been craving to head on over to a local arcade and play some classic pinball machines like Ghostbusters and Star Trek?

But then you think about having to spend money, waste your gas, and then deal with sticky bumpers and loud kids and suddenly the idea sounds terrible. Luckily, you can play a highly realistic pinball arcade machine from home by way of The Pinball Arcade for the Switch.

There are over 35 pinball tables to choose from, so if you’re a pinball aficionado, you can try this out for no charge at all.

Paladins

free games on switch

Paladins is another one of those team-based hero shooters similar to Overwatch, except that it is completely free to play with microtransactions available for cosmetic purchases only.

There are tons of customization options here to make your hero your own as well as polished battle mechanics that are surprisingly well done for a free to play game on Switch.

Also, being able to switch from a first-person view to a third-person view on the fly makes it easy for anyone to jump in and play, especially when you couple that with its simple control scheme.

Realm Royale

free games on switch

Yes, it’s exactly what it looks like: Realm Royale is another battle royale that plays similarly to Fortnite but it makes some interesting changes to the genre that are much appreciated.

Instead of starting players off with nothing at the beginning of a match, the game instead focuses more on distinct classes that players can choose from, allowing people to have a unique skillset and loadout before falling into the battlefield.

Basically, if you’re super tired of playing Fortnite and looking for something a bit more fantasy-based, it won’t hurt to download this one and give it a try.

Tetris 99

tetris 99

Tetris 99 is the newest iteration of the classic puzzle game but it twists things around a little bit.

Tetris 99 is an insanely fast battle royale version of the game where you get to face off against 98 other players in a battle to the death! If you thought the battle royale genre was only for shooters, then you better think again.

Your Tetris playing area is set in the middle of the screen but on the left and right sides of the screen, you can see all of the other players and check out if they’re doing better or worse than you.

You can also send over garbage blocks to other players if you clear long lines of blocks in quick succession. I’ve spent over 20 hours attempting to get to that number one spot and have ultimately failed, but I have come close several times.

It’s that addicting gameplay loop that’ll have you playing for hours on end.

Thanks for reading our list on some of the free Switch games that you can download right now. Have you guys been playing any of these games or have some other ones that you would recommend?
