prey 2016

As we bid farewell to the month of April, Xbox One owners will already be eagerly anticipating the games that await them in May 2017. Unfortunately, the month as a whole is a little slow for Microsoft’s system, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some great games to keep you occupied (and your wallet empty) all the same.

Arguably the biggest Xbox One release of May 2017 is also its first. Bethesda and Arkane Studios’ sci-fi first-person shooter title, Prey, arrives on May 5. Players assume the role of Morgan Yu as they explore the Talos-I space station. Unfortunately, it doesn’t take long for things to go wrong in Prey, and your first day on the job all goes a bit awry. Expect a tense and atmospheric shooter if you decide to pick it up.

Injustice 2

For the next titles to arrive on the Xbox One, we’ve got to move onto the third week of May. It does bring Ed Boon’s Injustice 2, though, meaning superhero (and villain) fans will finally be able to send their least favorite characters through walls and into space with impossibly powerful punches.

The Surge is the next ARPG title from the team behind Lords of the Fallen. This time, the action takes place in a world ravaged by war and global warming and offers a hardcore and challenging experience similar to that of the Dark Souls series. Finally, Skylar & Plux: Adventure on Clover Island is an homage to 3D platformers of yesteryear and will hope to be received better than April’s Yooka-Laylee. The game sees a Lynx and Owl duet take on the villainous CRT from turning their home into a wasteland.

  • May 16 – Injustice 2
  • May 16 – The Surge

rime

The final 10 days of May bring a few more games to the Xbox One table, with some particularly notable inclusions. Friday the 13th puts players in the role of either a Camp Crystal Lake counselor or the one and only Jason Voorhees for the very first time. If you’re one of the counselors, you’ll have to work together to escape and survive while you’re hunted down by Jason himself. The lucky player who assumes control of Voorhees will be tasked with taking them all down however they see fit. It’s a tactical, asymmetrical, multiplayer horror game, so if this sounds like your jam, be sure to keep an eye out.

If you’re looking for something a little less intense, then look no further than Tequila Works’ Rime. Players find themselves on a mysterious island with no memory of their past. You’ll have to explore the island, accompanied by a friendly fox, to uncover the secrets behind its ancient monuments.

The full list of May 2017’s final Xbox One releases is as follows:

  • May 26 – Friday the 13th
  • May 26 – Get Even
  • May 26 – Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2
  • May 26 – Rime
  • May 30 – Don’t Starve Mega Pack
  • May 30 – Perception
