May 2017 Video Game Releases
(Week One: 5/1 – 5/6)
May 2017 kicks things off slowly with a Friday release – which goes against the usual Tuesday release of AAA games. Normally, the last day before the weekend is for smaller titles or Nintendo, but this time around it’s for Bethesda’s and Arkane Studios’ Prey. If the demo is anything to go by, you’re in for an atmospheric, first-person shooter where nothing can be trusted thanks to an interesting alien race called the Typhon. Do you think you have what it takes to survive aboard the Talos-I and rid the space station of these foul creatures? Find out when the game hits on May 5.
May 5 – Prey (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
May 2017 Video Game Releases
(Week Two: 5/7 – 5/13)
Week two has a little more to offer, bringing a popular game to the Switch and some new goodies to the PS4 and PC. Minecraft builds its way onto Nintendo’s latest console, keeping up with its trend of being on pretty much any device with a screen. Meanwhile, a different type of sandbox hits PS4 and PC from the creator of Harvest Moon. Birthdays the Beginning will have you building worlds and forming biomes across a vast galaxy that you control. Rounding out the week is a retro-inspired shooter that will bring all the ’90s nostalgia rushing in.
Check out week two’s offerings:
- May 9 – Birthdays the Beginning (PS4, PC)
- May 9 – LocoRoco Remastered (PS4)
- May 9 – Strafe (PS4, PC)
- May 11 – Minecraft: Switch Edition (Switch)
May 2017 Video Game Releases
(Week Three: 5/14 – 5/20)
May 2017’s third week really steps it up with a little something for everyone, including a few standouts. If you happen to own a PSVR headset and have just been waiting on a game for it, Farpoint is a first-person shooter that drops you on a tense, alien planet. For fighting fans out there, Netherrealm is back at it with DC’s heroes and villains. Injustice 2 brings even more of the super-powered mayhem and throws in a healthy heap of RPG elements to help you customize the action. The Surge brings a more mechanical approach to Souls-like games, keeping up the speed and challenge that fans of the sub-genre are used to while trading magic and knight’s armor for a high-tech exoskeleton.
There’re plenty more video game releases in week three, which you can check out below:
- May 16 – Farpoint (PSVR)
- May 16 – Injustice 2 (PS4, Xbox One)
- May 16 – Operation Babel: New Tokyo Legacy (Vita)
- May 16 – The Surge (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
- May 19 – Endless Space 2 (PC)
- May 19 – Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia (3DS)

May 2017 Video Game Releases
(Final Days)
The final days of May 2017 are even more packed than the previous weeks. No matter what console you have, you’ll find something shiny and new to purchase (even if you have a Wii U). Games like Guilty Gear and Ultra Street Fighter II keep the fighting action at the forefront for fans who’ve been itching for something new to beat their friends at. Rime finally makes its way to PS4, Xbox One, and PC with a Switch release due sometime in the future.
Even the Wii U gets a bit of love thanks to Darksiders: Warmastered Edition. If you haven’t been scared enough this year, check out Friday the 13th, an asymmetric multiplayer game that tests if you’re able to survive Jason’s chase or kill a group of camp counselors on your own.
