Gone Home

The October 2017 free games offering from Xbox Gold subscriptions isn’t exactly the strongest, but it could be a good snag for players who are more into story-driven and puzzle games. The two big titles for this month are Gone Home: Console Edition and The Turing Test. Gone Home doesn’t really need any introduction. Developed by Fullbright, the game puts players in the shoes of a young woman who returns home and finds that everyone is gone. You’re then tasked with exploring the large, slightly creepy house, and figuring out exactly what happened when you were gone. The story is told through little narration bits from the character’s younger sister, and it’s a pretty gripping and immersive experience overall.

The Turing Test was released last year, and is a puzzle game that follows the story of Ava Turing as she excavates Jupiter’s moon. Things are not as they seem, though. There’s a deadly mystery to unfold here, and it involves a sentient AI and a series of tough puzzles to get through.

The other two free games available this month are Rayman 3 HD and Medal of Honor: Airborne. They’re a little dated at this point, but still worth checking out if the other titles don’t really appeal to you.

PlayStation Plus

Sony nails it yet again with another strong selection of free games for PlayStation Plus subscribers in October 2017. The big headlining title is, of course, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. It might be the weakest and most nonsensical entry in Hideo Kojima’s esteemed series, but it does also boast the best stealth mechanics and gameplay we’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing. The game runs remarkably well on the PS4 as well, and we can’t recall a time when the game ever dipped below 60 frames per second.

For horror fans, the Amnesia Collection is up for grabs. If you’re a fan of horror games like Outlast, but for some reason haven’t had the chance to check out Amnesia yet, this is pretty much where it all began. Amnesia started the trend of putting players in defenseless positions in horror games, forcing them to run and hide from enemies while uncovering a terrifying mystery. The Collection comes with the original Amnesia and its sequel Machine for Pigs.

For the PS3 and Vita brethren, we get Monster Jam Battlegrounds, Hustle Kings, Hue, and Sky Force Anniversary. Nothing too spectacular here, but Hue and Sky Force Anniversary are definitely worth checking out if you haven’t already. Hue is a vibrant and colorful side-scrolling puzzle game where you have to manipulate color palettes to progress, while Sky Force is a fun shoot-em-up title with tons of levels to conquer and items to collect.
