Free Games in December 2018
Xbox Games With Gold
As 2018 starts to wind down, so too have the free game offerings from Xbox with their Gold subscription service. That doesn’t mean that the free games up for grabs are shoddy by any stretch of the imagination, and there are a couple of old titles here that might be fun to play over the holiday season.
Never Alone, for instance, features a very snowy and wintry setting where players take control of a young girl and her fox to investigate the cause of a harsh blizzard. If you live in a country with four seasons, this is a great, simple title to play while you’re keeping cozy indoors.
Somewhat surprisingly, Dragon Age II is also available as one of the free games for Gold members. While it was released to rather divisive reception so many years ago, if you take a look at the game with an objective lens, it’s actually not a bad game at all. Sure, the open world aspects are rather limited, but Dragon Age II was home to some seriously memorable and well-developed characters, and the story comes complete with good narrative branches as well.

PS Plus
The free games available to PS Plus members aren’t all that crazy either, but there are still some quality gems to look out for in December 2018.
To start with, there’s Soma, which is easily one of the most engaging psychological horror games we’ve played in the past few years. It plays out rather similarly to the likes of Amnesia and Outlast, where you’re mostly exploring a creepy environment while piecing together clues about what really happened. It’s a deep dive (literally, because the game’s set underwater) into the main character’s mental state as well, and we definitely came away impressed with this one.
If you’re into racing games, Onrush will also be available for download this month. The game was released earlier this year, and we loved it as well. It’s not quite as shiny and polished as games like Forza Horizon 4, but it captures a sense of chaos that we hardly see in other games of the same genre.
Other than that, Iconoclasts and Papers, Please will also be up for grabs. One is a cute pixel art-style adventure game, while the other is a hard-hitting border control simulation game about poverty, authoritarian governments, and all that nice, fun stuff.

Steam
And, as always, Steam comes packed with tons of free-to-play and early access titles for you to try out, just in case your wallet’s a little thinned out from all that holiday shopping. We’ve picked out a few standout titles to keep an eye out for.
If you’re into fishing, boy do we have a game recommendation for you. Professional Fishing is a full-on fishing simulator that lets you fish to your heart’s content. Your controllable character can ride an ATV out to your favorite fishing spots, where you can start looking out for different kinds of species. And according to the game’s description, there’s also fish AI that makes them react differently. Which sounds pretty insane.
Direwolf is another interesting online multiplayer card-based game to look out for, where the good guys will have to try to weed out the evil-doers in their group by communicating and lying to each other.
Last but not least, Jungle Guardians is a management/simulation game where you’ll be helping to grow an Amazon rainforest, and also help to protect it from hunters and poachers. At the same time, you’ll also need to track missing animals, and gather resources to ensure that your animals are doing well.
And those are our main picks for the most interesting free games you can get on Steam in December 2018. Which of these will you be picking up? Let us know in the comments down below.
