Free Games in July 2018

This month’s Gold offerings are heavily focused on multiplayer titles. Assault Android Cactus puts you in the shoes (or roots?) of Constable Cactus or nine other playable characters as you blast through bad guys in an intense, bullet hell, twin-stick shooter title. The story never lulls, and the action is even more fun to get into if you’ve got people to play with.

Death Squared probably needs no introduction, and if you can get up to three other people to play with you, you’re in for a pretty fun puzzle ride. The game features 80 tricky puzzle levels, complete with fun narration and unique level design to keep you and your friends entertained for hours on end. If you’re in the mood for some competition, Virtua Fighter 5 is also up for grabs this month, and this version of the game includes some new offensive features and mechanics for you to play around with.

Lastly, Splinter Cell Conviction is available for players looking for a solo experience. The stealth gameplay still holds up well to this day, and hopefully it’ll alleviate some of the pain of not getting a new Splinter Cell announcement at Ubisoft’s E3 press conference.

  • Assault Android Cactus
  • Death Squared
  • Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown
  • Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Conviction

ethan mars heavy rain

With the recent release of Detroit: Become Human, Sony has opted to put Heavy Rain up for grabs in this month’s Plus offerings. If you played Beyond: Two Souls and didn’t think the story was quite as engaging as you’d expected, Heavy Rain might change your mind. It still suffers from weird plot holes and questionable design decisions, but it holds up quite well today, and the mystery is much more engaging than the weird sci-fi juju Beyond had to offer.

Action game fans will also be pleased to know that Absolver is available in July 2018 as well. The game suffered from some brutal latency issues at launch, but the melee combat is very fun to master, and there are a variety of martial art styles you can start with, including the iconic Wing Chun-like air style from the Ip Man movies.

Platformer and RPG fans should also get a lot of value out of Rayman 3 and Deception IV, but the real star of the show this month is definitely Zero Time Dilemma. This is a visual novel with some intense escape room puzzles and one of the most insane sci-fi stories you’ll ever experience. We recommend grabbing the first two Zero Escape games on PS4 or Vita (999 and Virtue’s Last Reward) before hopping into this one, though.

  • Heavy Rain
  • Absolver
  • Rayman 3 HD
  • Deception IV: The Nightmare Princess
  • Space Overlords
  • Zero Escape: Zero Time Dilemma

Steam

Free Games in July 2018

Steam has a couple of exciting free game releases in July 2018 as well. The biggest one is probably Defiance 2050, which is an online co-operative shooter with tons of character classes and weapons to choose from. The game is free-to-play, but you can shell out for the Founder’s Pack to get some extra goodies to start you off.

Icons: Combat Arena is also releasing on July 13, and is a free-to-play multiplayer brawler, similar to the likes of Smash and PlayStation All-Stars. The graphical style looks pretty nice, and the vibrant color palette is certainly eye-catching. We’ll need to get some hands-on time with it to see if it’s as fun to play, but from what we’re seeing so far, it’s looking quite promising.

Other smaller releases include the chilling puzzle game Panic Room 2, a chill puzzle game called Dot to Dot Puzzles, and a decent looking RTS game called Tentlan. You can check out the full list of upcoming Steam free game releases here.

  • Panic Room 2: Hide and Seek
  • Dot to Dot Puzzles
  • Defiance 2050
  • Tentlan
  • Icons: Combat Arena
