METRO EXODUS
We love a good surprise and the news of a new Metro game was exciting to see! The latest sequel in the acclaimed Metro series looks to be utilizing the power of both the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro. The series will be taking things above ground this time and looks to be switching to an open-world setting as opposed to the linear gameplay in previous outings. However, the gameplay trailer did start off in that familiar underground fashion, where we see Artyom taking on several grotesque bat-looking creatures as he searches for a way out.
That’s not all: a giant mutated-looking bear gives Artyom a fight for his life in the climactic moment from the trailer. Although, if you were watching Sony’s press conference, it seems as though mutated bears will be trendy this year.
Artyom makes his grand escape by zip-lining over to a train taking viewers to the title screen “Metro Exodus.” The subtitle “Exodus” implies he is leaving Metro, but where he is headed is yet to be known. We can’t wait to find out more about this much-anticipated title as it won’t be hitting shelves until 2018.

MONSTER HUNTER: WORLD
Monster Hunter hasn’t touched a Sony console since the PSP, choosing to stick with Nintendo until now. That’s why Monster Hunter: World cracks this list as a big surprise that came out of E3 2017. The graphics look gorgeous as the main character slashes through giant creatures and cooks them on a spit. What’s even cooler is the amount of work these creatures put out in trying to slay you. Highlights included seeing a giant dinosaur creature crashing through walls just to get to you. This is where the game really benefits from the power of the PS4 Pro.
For many, Monster Hunter’s return to consoles will be their first hunting experience in this franchise, and Capcom is likely hoping to hook in a wider audience. The epic scope of the creatures and gameplay will be a welcomed addition on the bigger screen.
Monster Hunter: World hits PS4 in 2018 with later dates to come for Xbox One and PC.
SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS REMASTER
Japanese studios made a splash at this year’s E3, but the surprise that towered above the rest was a remaster for Shadow of the Colossus.
Remastering games is becoming more popular as of late and it’s a trend that hopefully continues. Shadow of the Colossus was a game that still played well despite its 2005 release date but based on the trailer, it has definitely benefited from the face lift.
For those who missed out on this title, the gameplay is straightforward but highly effective. You rid the land of the giant beasts, one boss battle after another, as they continually get taller and more difficult to handle. A lot of the fun comes from figuring out how to take down each beast while the story gets more dramatic and emotional. Everything we loved about the original looks to still be in tact. Let’s hope we can say the same about that wonderful music.
METROID PRIME 4
Nintendo had a lot of pressure going in to E3. The Switch honeymoon is over, and now gamers want to know what they can expect in the months and years ahead. Nintendo listened to the fans, stepped up their game and shared news on one of their hottest properties, a new Metroid Prime. Wait, make that two Metroid games. Metroid: Samus Returns is coming to 3DS, showing that they aren’t casting the beloved handheld to the side just yet.
However, the meat of the announcement came from the logo for Metroid Prime 4. We haven’t seen a Metroid Prime sequel since Metroid Prime 3 in 2007. While we didn’t receive much more than a logo, the game is now in development and that’s all we need to hear for right now.
BEYOND GOOD & EVIL 2
BEYOND. GOOD. AND. EVIL. 2!!!! For over a decade fans have waited for this to happen. Continually having their hopes renewed and dashed, but no longer. While there was a concept trailer released back in 2008, news of this magnitude hasn’t popped up in years. No more questions about it, the sequel is definitely happening.
The trailer gives us a pretty lengthy taste of what’s in store. The biggest takeaway from the Beyond Good & Evil 2 announcement is that it’s actually a prequel taking place before the birth of Jade.
We also got a healthy dose of the humor that roped people in to the world of the original game. Although it is an all CG trailer so we don’t know exactly how well the game itself will look, we can imagine it’ll look pretty great. The world building looks incredibly dense and creative, but it’ll take several viewings to soak it all in because of all of the thrilling action on display.
Going into E3 they said they weren’t going to show anything from the game, which fortunately ended up just being their way of trying to contain this massive surprise. To say this was a shock is a bit of an understatement. If felt like more than that. It was a genuine emotional moment for many, including the game’s creator, who cried from the realization that the 15 year wait was coming to an end. Moments like these are what makes E3 so special.
These are 5 games that surprised us big time. What was your favorite surprise announcement from E3 2017?
