The popular MMO Tera is finally coming to consoles this month, after being released on PC in 2012. While the game certainly has some similarities to popular MMOs like World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV, there are a few key differences.

Tera’s combat is much more action-based than your typical MMO, with the game requiring the player to actively dodge and attack. Everything plays out in real-time, adding in tactical elements to make combat deeper. It’s certainly a far cry from the typical hot-bar combat system you find in other games. Luckily, Tera is also completely free-to-play, meaning you can jump right in when it releases on April 3. Most of the character classes will be included at launch, with more added in later. The console version of the game is pretty much the same as the PC version, at least it will be once everything is updated down the road. You can head over to Tera’s official website to see even more, including a primer if you’re planning on jumpming into the console version.

Extinction (April 10)

Extinction has certainly drawn inspiration from the likes of Attack on Titan and Shadow of the Colossus, pitting you against colossal ogres hellbent on destroying the world. You play as Avil, a lone fighter standing against the hulking menaces.

Extinction comes from developer Iron Galaxy, the same studio that developed the most recent Killer Instinct, and it seems like they’ve brought some of that expertise over. The game sports a complex battle system that lets you zip around on the ground and in the air to hit weak points on the ogres. You’re given plenty of tools like double jumps, dashes, and even a hover ability to quickly make your way through the world and dispatch the beasts, before heading to the next point and taking down another one. It’s a fast game that looks like it’ll have a breakneck pace as you try to defend your homeland.

Extinction certainly has a novel concept. However, we’ll have to wait and see if  Extinction can really follow through on the lofty concept it has.

Yakuza 6: The Song of Life (April 17)

Best PS4 Games in April 2018

Yakuza has become a staple exclusive series for PlayStation over the last few years, and Yakuza 6: The Song of Life brings an end to Kazuma Kiryu’s long journey. Even though Yakuza 6 takes place directly after Yakuza 5, it makes a ton of changes. It’s the first game in the series to use the studio’s new “Dragon Engine,” which puts a big focus on seamlessness. This means that Kamurocho has been condensed a little bit, but there are no loading screens whenever you enter a battle or store. The engine also brings a big overhaul to the game’s graphics, and Yakuza 6 is an absolutely gorgeous game.

Even more changes come with overhauled combat and skills systems, as well as a host of new minigames. Yakuza 6 introduces a phenomenal cast of new characters, as Kiryu searches for the reason that his daughter, Haruka, was injured in a hit-and-run accident. It’s an emotional journey that wraps up many of the relationships Kiryu has built over the years, and we found Yakuza 6 to be one of the strongest entries in the series yet. God of War (April 20)

Best PS4 Games in April 2018

God of War is a series that needs little introduction, and Kratos finally makes his triumphant return on the PS4 this month. There are big changes coming to this series, however, the first of which is a brand new setting steeped in Norse mythology.

God of War takes place years after any of the previous entries. Kratos has grown old and moved away from the lands of Greece, building a new family in the process. Kratos’ young son Atreus is your constant sidekick in the game, and despite being family it seems like the two don’t actually know that much about each other. The new God of War gives off some Last of Us vibes with the relationship between Kratos and Atreus, and the bow-wielding kid will also assist you in the game’s overhauled combat. This time around you’ll be using a deadly new axe Kratos has access to, cleaving through enemies and throwing it from range. Nearly every part of the axe can be upgraded or swapped out through the course of the game and will help add customization and variety to your combat style.

We’ll have to wait for the full game to see just where this new location takes Kratos, but everything about God of War points toward another PlayStation classic in the making.
