I remember my first night in Five Nights at Freddys 2 like it was yesterday. The original game was scary, but the sequel threw twice as many threats at me and expected me to keep track of them all while winding a music box. If you are struggling to tell your Withereds from your Toys, I have put together this guide to every character you will meet in the 1987 pizzeria. This is not just a list of names; I will show you how they move and how I survived their jumpscares.
If you are new to the series, you might want to see my guide on [how to play Five Nights at Freddys in chronological order] to understand where this prequel fits into the timeline.
Meet the shiny new Toy Freddy
Toy Freddy is the new face of the franchise. He is fatter than the original bear and has these bright red cheeks that make him look like a plastic doll. I found that he is actually one of the easiest to manage because he does not use the vents. He starts on the Show Stage and slowly walks through the Game Area and the hallway to reach you.
- He is active starting on Night 1.
- When he is in the hallway, his eyes turn black.
- If he enters your office, you have to put on your mask immediately.
- On Night 1, my reaction window was about 1.667 seconds, but by Night 6, he was much faster.
Survival tips for the erratic Toy Bonnie

Toy Bonnie is the blue bunny with the long eyelashes. In my experience, he is the most active character in the early nights. He is the only animatronic I saw actually moving across the screen while I had the mask on. He follows a long path through Party Room 3, Party Room 4, and Party Room 2 before hitting the right air vent.
- He is the first one to leave the stage on Night 1.
- He always enters from the right vent.
- In the 2025 movie, I noticed he was played by MatPat, which was a cool nod for long time fans.
The mystery of Toy Chica and her missing beak

Toy Chica is a yellow chicken that looks much more feminine than the original. The creepiest part for me is that her beak and eyes disappear once she leaves the stage. She moves through the Main Hall and Party Room 1 to get to your left vent.
- She is highly aggressive on the first few nights.
- I learned that she will only jumpscare you if she has been in the office for six individual 1 second intervals while you have your monitor up.
- She is often considered the scariest of the Toy line because of that empty smile.
How to handle Mangle and the radio static

Mangle was supposed to be a Toy Foxy, but the kids at the pizzeria kept taking it apart. Now it is just a mess of wires and limbs that crawls on the walls and ceiling. My biggest tip for Mangle is to listen for the radio static. If you hear that garbled noise, it means Mangle is very close.
- Mangle can go almost everywhere in the building.
- It enters the office through the right air vent.
- If you hear the static while you are in the office, put on the mask and wait for the noise to stop.
Dealing with the sabotage of Balloon Boy

Balloon Boy, or BB, is the character I hate the most. He does not kill you, but he is a partner in crime for the others. He hides in the left vent and, if he gets into your office, he disables your flashlight and vent lights.
- He starts moving on Night 2.
- I always listen for his hi or hello sounds to know he is moving.
- If he gets in, Withered Foxy will almost certainly kill you because you cannot use your light to scare him off.
Everything you need to know about JJ

JJ is like a secret sister to Balloon Boy. She looks just like him but has blue and purple clothes instead of red and blue. I found her hiding under my desk a few times. She is just an easter egg and does not actually hurt you or affect the game.
Winding the music box for the Puppet

The Puppet, or the Marionette, is the most important character to watch. You will find it in the Prize Corner on Camera 11. I had to keep the music box wound up at all times. If the music stops, the Puppet will leave its box and come for you. Once that happens, there is almost nothing you can do to stop it.
- The Puppet is not fooled by the Freddy mask.
- The music box winds down faster as the nights go on.
- In the movie version, I learned the Puppet is possessed by Charlotte Emily, who wants revenge against parents.
Surviving the decrepit Withered Freddy

Withered Freddy is the original bear from the first game, but he is all torn up now. He stays in the Parts and Service room until Night 3. He comes down the main hallway just like his Toy version.
- He is more active as the nights progress.
- When he stands in your office, you have to be fast with that mask.
- I noticed he often waits until Bonnie and Chica have already left their starting spots before he moves.
The faceless horror of Withered Bonnie

Withered Bonnie is honestly the stuff of nightmares. He is missing his entire face and his left arm. He is a left vent specialist. Unlike the Toy animatronics, he will not show up in the vent light. He just teleports directly into your office when you put your monitor down.
- He starts moving on Night 3.
- He is usually the first Withered animatronic to leave the back room.
- I only had about 0.75 seconds to react to him on the hardest difficulty.
How to spot Withered Chica in the vents

Withered Chica has a broken jaw that is stuck open and she is missing both of her hands. She follows the same rules as Bonnie but comes from the right vent. I always found her T-pose in the office to be one of the most intimidating things in the game.
- She moves from Party Room 4 to Party Room 2 before hitting the vent.
- Like the other Withereds, she forces your monitor down if she is in the room.
Flashlight strategies for Withered Foxy

Withered Foxy is the only main animatronic that the mask does not work on. He stands at the end of the hallway and stares at you. My secret for Foxy is to flash the light at him about five times every so often. This resets his AI timer and keeps him from lunging at you.
- He starts appearing on Night 2.
- I learned that wearing the mask actually makes Foxy more aggressive because of a hidden value called Alt D.
- You only have a limited amount of flashlight battery, so do not just hold the light on him.
Finding the rare Golden Freddy

Golden Freddy is a mysterious, slumped over version of Freddy. He starts appearing on Night 6. He can show up in your office or as a giant floating head in the hallway.
- If he is in your office, put on the mask immediately.
- If he is in the hallway, do not flash your light at him or he will jumpscare you.
- There is a lot of debate about who possesses him, but many fans think it is a spirit named Cassidy.
Avoiding the game crashing Shadow Bonnie and Shadow Freddy

These two are extremely rare. Shadow Freddy appears in the Parts and Service room, sitting where Bonnie usually stays. Shadow Bonnie appears right in your office. I have to warn you: if you look at them for too long, they will actually crash your game and send you back to your desktop.
- Shadow Bonnie has a one in a million chance of appearing.
- To get rid of Shadow Bonnie, I found that you need to put on the mask or use the flashlight quickly.
The secret identity of Fredbear

You will not see Fredbear in the main game, but he is all over the lore. He was the original mascot before Freddy Fazbear. I saw him in the Atari style minigames that sometimes play after you die. He looks a lot like Golden Freddy but with a purple hat and bowtie.
The human faces of Jeremy and Fritz

You play the first six nights as Jeremy Fitzgerald. He is the guy getting the phone calls and the 100.50 dollar paycheck at the end. On the seventh night, you play as Fritz Smith. I think it is interesting that Fritz gets fired on his very first day for tampering with the animatronics. Some people think they might even be the same person using different names.
Who is the Purple Guy

The Purple Guy, or William Afton, is the real villain of the story. You only see him in the death minigames as a purple sprite. He is the one who murdered the children that now possess the animatronics. If you want to see how he compares to the other villains in the series, you should check out his original victims by looking at FNAF1 characters.
That covers everyone you’ll run into in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. I’ve spent way too much time staring at these cameras, so I hope my breakdown helps you make it through your shift. If you’re trying to wrap your head around the timeline like I was, you should definitely look at how to play Five Nights at Freddy’s in chronological order. It’s also worth checking out every Five Nights at Freddy’s game and spin-off to make sure you haven’t missed any part of the story.
