If you’ve played Resident Evil 7 or Resident Evil Village, then you know it’s become a meme that Ethan Winters has incredibly bad luck when it comes to injuring his hands. From getting them sliced to having them straight up cut right off, Ethan has suffered through a lot.
To be fair though, the developers at Capcom probably don’t have a weird hatred for Ethan’s hands. They probably just get hurt so often because the game is in first-person and it’s a lot easier for the player to see and experience hand injuries since they’re always right in your face.
Despite countless scratches, scrapes, and tears, Ethan still perseveres and somehow manages to just brush everything off. Either the first aid medicine in Resident Evil 7 & Resident Evil Village is godly, or either he is some sort of Captain America like super-solider unbeknownst to everyone including himself.
Some of Ethan’s injuries are nothing to scoff at, though, and in real life could easily kill someone. As such, we did the only logical thing we could think of and made a list ranking each of Ethan Winter’s Hand injuries in Resident Evil, ranging from not so bad, to don’t even want to think about.
Spoiler warning for Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village
Getting His Left Hand Cut By Lady Dimitrescu
Starting off the list is a simple, but painful-looking slice to the hand. Ethan obtains this injury when he enters Castle Dimitrescu and is discovered by the Dimitrescu sisters. They impale his legs with scythe-like blades and drag him to the tall vampire queen that is Lady Dimitrescu.
To taste some of his blood, she cuts his hand with a knife and begins to feast. Ultimately, it’s the nasty wound on this list, but it definitely wouldn’t tickle. Plus, it probably doesn’t feel nice to have blood sucked out of your body.
With all that said, Ethan could easily wrap this wound up and not have to worry about it, plus it’s not all that gross or gory, so it makes the bottom of the list. Tis’ but a scratch.
A Bug Popping Out of His Right Hand
Resident Evil’s Ethan Winters Hand Injuries Ranked
Creatures digging into and popping out of a body is a classic horror trope. And since Resident Evil is all about horror, it makes complete sense that Ethan encounters three sisters who can evaporate into a swarm of bugs that can invade and crawl around in your skin.
When first encountering the Dimitrescu sisters, Ethan feels a painful crawling sensation in his right hand. When examining it, a bug pops out of his hand and flies away. While it might not have been excruciating, it still isn’t something anyone should have to go through.
Try to think of a bubble popping but it’s blood and a bug comes out of it. The thought of something crawling inside you is enough to make anyone’s skin shiver.
Screwdriver Through His Left Hand
Resident Evil’s Ethan Winters Hand Injuries Ranked
Now we’re getting to the really bloody and scream-worthy injures. While looking for his wife Mia in Resident Evil 7, Ethan is actually able to find her pretty quickly, though something seems off.
Ethan eventually loses Mia and, after stumbling around the Baker Estate, finds her again. Mia then has a strange outburst of anger and drives a screwdriver through his left hand, pinning him to the wall.
And boy, is he pinned. He desperately tries to pull the screwdriver from the wall for almost a minute before finally getting unstuck. Imagine walking around a dirty house with a gaping hole in your hand?
It’s a pretty bad injury that would take a lot of time to heal and lead to a mess of blood. With how much stuff Ethan picks up in that house, there’s no way he isn’t getting an infection.
Getting His Right Hand Quickly Sliced Off
Resident Evil’s Ethan Winters Hand Injuries Ranked
Throughout his time in Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village, Ethan has the occasional limb chopped off. Since this injury isn’t on the top of the list, it just goes to show that Ethan endures a lot of pain in these games.
While making his way through Castle Dimitrescu in Resident Evil Village, Ethan finds a lever connected to an elevator. As he goes to pull the lever, something quick flashes across the screen as Ethan’s entire hand falls off, revealing Lady Dimitrescu and her sharp claws to be the culprit.
This whole sequence is incredibly gross, as you can see all of his bones and muscles, and he literally has to use his hand to open the lever then pick it up.
While it’s certainly hard even to fathom how painful this would be, it is at least fast and clean-cut, whereas the other entries on this list are not. It’s also a little higher on this list because he’s able to attach it moments later when he pours some of that magic healing liquid he always uses, and it works like nothing ever happened.
Using His Body Weight To Rip Meat Hooks Through Both of His Hands
Resident Evil’s Ethan Winters Hand Injuries Ranked
Right after getting his hand cut and the blood sucked out of it, Lady Dimitrescu and her daughters string Ethan up by the hands on a pair of meet hooks. That means his entire body weight is being held up by the hooks in his hands.
Rather than trying any other method first, Ethan decides to just rip the hooks through both of his hands. This guy really can’t catch a break, can he? Imagine the pain of hooks slowly ripping through your hands.
This injury causes Ethan to have two huge gashes from the middle of his hands, all the way to between his fingers. Rest assured though, this too is fixed by some miracle healing sauce nearby. Even though it gets fixed, there is still no denying that this one is gruesome and, to be honest, would probably ruin his hands completely in real life.
Getting His Left Hand Mowed Off By A Chainsaw
Resident Evil’s Ethan Winters Hand Injuries Ranked
Wasn’t it already bad enough that he just got a screwdriver through his hand? Well, about two seconds after that incident occurs near the start of Resident Evil 7, Mia goes all Texas Chainsaw Massacre on Ethan, mowing his left hand off.
The thing about chainsaws is that it’s not a clean or quick cut like we saw from Lady Dimitrescu in Resident Evil Village. Instead, it slowly rips through Ethan’s entire arm and was a mess of blood and screaming. A chainsaw blade isn’t just sharp either; it has teeth if you weren’t already wincing in secondhand pain.
Then, to top it all off, Ethan gets his hand stapled back on, quite violently by Jack, who probably doesn’t have his medical license. This is easily one of his worst injuries, but not the worst since his hand does get reattached once again.
A Lycan Biting Off Half His Left Hand
Resident Evil’s Ethan Winters Hand Injuries Ranked
Ethan’s worst hand injury comes in at the start of Resident Evil Village, right as he first encounters the Lycans for the first time. When falling into the basement of a house, Ethan maneuvers around in the dark for a bit, trying to figure out where he is and what is going on. Before he can get his barring, a Lycan bites part of his hand off.
It’s not just the top of his fingers either; he gets bitten on more of a sideways angle and has two of his fingers ripped off. This injury is tough to stomach because you can see his exposed bone and muscle. On top of this, no matter how much magic healing sauce is used, Ethan retains this injury.
Ethan walks around and does a lot of hands-on activities during Resident Evil Village while missing half of his hand, not to mention the pain of watching your fingers getting eaten in front of you, making this hands down the worst one he’s suffered through.
