The independent game publisher, Devolver Digital, is well-known for its crazy antics and insane marketing stunts. From its weirdly iconic E3 press conferences, to its gag games like Devolver Bootleg –the publisher has proven time and time again that they have a sense of humour and aren’t afraid to break the mold on how a gaming studio is supposed to act. But did you know they also have a ton of great games?
Devolver Digital has published a ton of incredible and successful titles including Enter the Gungeon, the Serious Sam series, and Hotline Miami. They even published one of the biggest titles to release last year — Fall Guys!
While I’m sure you’ve heard of, and maybe even played some of the games above, Devolver has worked on a lot of great games, so we wanted to showcase a few their titles you might have missed.
Here are five Devolver Digital games that may have flown under your radar.
The Messenger
Devolver Digital Games That May Have Flown Under Your Radar
The Messenger is a brutally difficult Metroidvania title with a solid story, fun cast of characters, and hilarious dialogue –no, seriously this game is really funny.
The Messenger takes a lot of inspiration from NES and SNES titles like Ninja Gaiden.
What starts as a simple platformer quickly turns into a full-on Metroidvania title above halfway through the game. I won’t spoil too much of the game plot, but at this time a concept introduce in the game allows players to switch between classic 8-bit and beautiful 16-bit graphics –both of which fit the game’s aesthetic and gameplay perfectly.
The Messenger rides the line between a spiritual successor and a completely unique property perfectly. It is especially worth checking out if you’ve enjoyed other Metroidvania titles like Hollow Knight.
Downwell
Devolver Digital Games That May Have Flown Under Your Radar
Downwell is a fast-paced roguelike tasking players with the challenge of survival while infinitely dropping down a well, hence the name.
The gameplay consistently keeps you on your toes with obstacles to avoid, enemies to kill, and power-ups to grab. There is little to no down time in this game, so you have to stay alert to stay alive.
The gameplay and graphics of the game harken back to arcade titles from the 80s and 90s. Think of it as a bit of a vertical Mega Man. It’s definitely worth checking out for anyone looking for a quick game to jump into for a run or two.
Disc Room
Devolver Digital Games That May Have Flown Under Your Radar
Disc Room is a short and sweet title, tasking you with one goal — survival!
You’re a brave scientist living in the year 2089. A giant disc has appeared in Jupiter’s orbit and you are the lucky astronaut sent to explore the deadly ship.
The gameplay is simple: survive long enough in each of the ship’s killer rooms to be able to progress to the next. While that sounds easy in concept, the rooms are out to kill you and will do whatever it takes to do so.
This is another great pick-up and play title like Downwell. It may be one of the lesser known titles by Devolver Digital, but definitely one worth checking out.
OlliOlli 1 & 2
Devolver Digital Games That May Have Flown Under Your Radar
Have you ever been sitting around, playing with a techdeck, thinking how cool it would be if there was a video game version of this? Yeah… me neither…
But if you did, then OlliOlli is just the game for you.
OlliOlli and OlliOlli 2 are 2D skateboarding games, allowing you to perform hundreds of tricks after dozen of levels set in weird and interesting locations.
Want to do kick-flip off of a dinosaur’s back? We got you covered. Want to grind your way across a rollercoaster track? Go for it!
While the Tony Hawk and Skate games are definitely the way to go for a more realistic skateboarding experience, OlliOlli is a fun and unique title for skateboarding fans.
Loop Hero
Devolver Digital Games That May Have Flown Under Your Radar
Loop Hero is the newest title being published by Devolver Digital and has received a ton of praise so far. But it is still quite new, so there is a good chance you either haven’t heard of it yet, or just don’t really know what it is. But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!
Loop Hero is a roguelike throwing players into an endless loop, combining deckbuilding mechanics with city-builder gameplay for a truly unique and challenging experience.
You’ll be able to acquire new cards, classes, and guardians to improve your run. Whether you win or lose the run is partially up to you with the game’s risk vs. rewards mechanic. Will you put your treasure on the line and try to win the run? or will you except the loss and cash out early? The choice is up to you.
