What the ‘Failed to Check for Updates’ Genshin Impact Error Means

As an always-online game, each time you boot Genshin Impact the game connects to the nearest regional server and crosschecks that the version on your hardware is up to date. It’s a process that typically takes a matter of seconds.

Unfortunately, when you get a Failed to Check for Updates message it basically means the game wasn’t able to complete this check and won’t launch. And since there’s no way to play Genshin Impact offline you’re unable to play it until the issue is resolved.

How to Fix Failed to Check for Updates

We’re sorry to say that regardless of which platform you’re playing on your options are very limited.

One option is to try using a VPN and access the game as if you’re in a different country. Of course, you’ll need to make sure it’s within the same region as your actual country of origin since otherwise you’ll connect to a foreign server and lose your progress.

But using a VPN is somewhat problematic in itself since it can cause other Error Codes like 4201 and 4206.

Assuming you’ve already tried rebooting the game/game client several times already, the last resort solution is to reinstall the game. Yes, we know that’s a cop-out answer but it’s the only tried and tested method that seems to be working for other folks.

It’s either that or just be patient and try reconnecting again once a decent amount of time has passed.

That’s all the information we have on what the Genshin Impact ‘Failed to Check for Updates’ Error means and how to fix it. For more tips and guides, check out Twinfinite’s wiki.
