5 Games From 2019 That Definitely Need a Sequel

This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information

2019 was a fantastic year for new IPs, fresh indies, and types of games that we haven’t seen in a very long time, like a single-player Star Wars game for example. It would be fantastic to see more of that in the years to come so here are fivr amazing games in 2019 that definitely deserve a sequel or a follow-up of some sort.

Astral Chain

PlatinumGames’ newest IP, Astral Chain, gave fans a highly stylized post-apocalyptic anime world with demons, an amazing soundtrack (with vocals) and kitties, lots and lots of sweet kitties.

Astral Chain’s world was brimming with content and the unique combat system was a fantastic choice that really made this JRPG stand out from Platinum’s other hits.

Returning to this world in a fleshed-out sequel in the future would be incredible and would be welcomed with open arms. As long as there are more motorcycle chases and a bop-tastic soundtrack, you can count me in.

Katana Zero

Katana Zero is a hyper-stylized 2D action/platformer that has you playing as an assassin who wields a very sharp katana. The game oozes with a neo-noir 80s cyberpunk aesthetic that might remind you of something like Hotline Miami or Blade Runner.

It’s fast-paced, incredibly satisfying, and the music is constantly bumping. Since you can die in just one hit (same goes for the enemies) you’ll be learning how to go about different sections very quickly because of the multiple deaths that you’ll face.

Also, the ending of Katana Zero sort of leaves the door open for more content so here’s hoping that Askiisoft and publisher Devolver Digital can get a sequel going very soon.

A Plague Tale: Innocence

Developed by Asobo Studio, A Plague Tale: Innocence was a surprise sleeper hit of 2018 for myself and many others as the third-person adventure game took players on a harrowing journey through a plague-infested France in the 1300s.

After their father passes, Amicia and Hugo must run away from the Inquisition which leads them on a long path that ends up taking the story places that I never expected.

Each encounter with the inquisitions is immensely tense, the relationship between the two main characters is very compelling, and there are so many damn rats in this game that actually serve as a big gameplay factor later on in the story… it’s absolutely wild and sort of disgusting.

Amicia and Hugo’s story could continue in a sequel or it would even be great to just get a different game altogether that takes place in a similar time frame with other characters. A Plague Tale could be the start of a series of games similar to Innoncence and it would be amazing to see that sort of anthology from Asobo.

The Outer Worlds

The Outer Worlds, 2019 Games that definitely need a sequel

Obsidian set out to make an RPG like Fallout that wasn’t as poor as Bethesda’s Fallout 76 and boy did it succeed. The Outer Worlds gives players a colorful and vibrant open-world setting that has really cool gunplay, interesting companion characters with depth, and humor that pays homage to Fallout: New Vegas with a little bit of Borderlands sprinkled in.

There are narrative decisions that ultimately alter the plot of the story and the game actually encourages you to play however you want. The Outer Worlds may be a bit smaller than other RPGs but its compactness makes it easy for anyone to jump in and not feel bogged down by filler and meaningless side quests.

We hope that Obsidian can return to this world and develop a sequel down the line because jumping from planet to planet in this game is incredibly fun and the tightness of it all feels great.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

Respawn and EA’s narrative-driven single-player Star Wars game had fans like myself frightened by the thought of microtransactions plaguing this title but lo and behold, the game is actually pretty good.

The gameplay feels like a big video game smoothie that takes the best parts of adventure games like Uncharted, Tomb Raider, and Metroid Prime, and mixes it all up to deliver a “best hits” kind of action game and it surprisingly works.

None of its gameplay feels revolutionary or as good as any of those games listed above but Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is probably the best Star Wars game ever when it comes to telling a compelling story and making players feel like an actual Jedi.

Considering how well the game launched in terms of sales and critical reception, there’s no doubt that there will be a sequel in the near future.

Star Wars popularity is at an all-time high now and it would be foolish to not have a new game every couple of years. There are so many stories to tell in this universe that haven’t been told and having that in video game form is one of the best routes to go.
