The spooky time of Halloween is upon us and there are two big Halloween-themed video games coming out to wrap up the end of October. Down below we have compared both of these exclusives to see which one is the best choice for you to spend your hard-earned cash on! Let’s begin, shall we?

Story

When it comes to a deep narrative and story arcs, Luigi’s Mansion has to take the backseat on this one if I’m being quite honest. Nintendo is usually not known for its interesting stories or compelling plot; Luigi’s Mansion 3 has basically the same story from the other Luigi’s Mansion games and it’s not surprising in the slightest.

Luigi has to rescue Mario and Peach from King Boo –it’s literally the same but just takes place in a different location. That doesn’t mean that the game is not good though, but if you are looking for a somewhat deeper narrative, MediEvil has that going for it, just barely.

The main character in MediEvil, Sir Daniel Fortesque, is an absolute goofball who ended up dead by running headfirst into a war to prove that he was brave, but ultimately ended up dead by getting shot in the head with an arrow.

He gets accidentally revived by an evil sorcerer, giving him a second chance to right his wrongs and become the underdog hero that he’s always wanted to be.

The cast of characters are super silly, the writing is witty and comical, and it’s hard not to root for the guy throughout his journey.

It’s not a deep story by any means, but for a 3D action-platformer, it does just enough to keep the player invested and because of that, the winner for this round goes to the PS4 exclusive –sorry Luigi.

Winner: MediEvil

Gameplay

Luigi's mansion 3 vs medievil, which game to buy

The modern remake of MediEvil does a fine job at recreating the 1998 classic with some added bells and whistles but some issues keep it from feeling like a game that released in 2019. The camera can be wonky, the combat can be repetitive and clunky, the checkpoints are unforgiving, and the enemies feel really cheap at times.

The game is still really fun to play and people who adored the original will most likely have no qualms with how the game is presented today, but for those looking for a fresh new action-platformer on PS4, there are better options out there for you.

As far as Luigi’s Mansion 3’s gameplay goes, it’s much more solid and easy to handle, making it very accessible to new players and veterans alike. Using Luigi’s Poltergust (vacuum cleaner) feels better than ever and interacting with the environment, sucking up ghosts, and looking for hidden gems and boos is so satisfying that it can be hard to put the game down.

Each and every boss fight in the game feels different from the last with interesting mechanics coming into play to make things feel fresh and varied –each one is also brimming with personality even without any voice acting.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 plays flawlessly on the Switch and so far, there have not been any issues such as camera controls or clumsy combat sequences. The gameplay is superb and will most likely go down as one of the best Switch exclusives of 2019.

Winner: Luigi’s Mansion 3

Replayability

MediEvil

Since MediEvil is now on PS4, not only has the game been remastered but Sony has added trophies and a shiny platinum for those that want to 100% the game and unlock everything there is to unlock.

If you want to do this, it’ll actually only take you about 10 hours or less if you follow a guide, and it only requires a minimum of two playthroughs and the second one doesn’t have to be fully completed.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 on the other hand, is a much longer game that also has a ton of collectibles to find. The main campaign takes about 13-15 hours to complete and there are 15 floors to go through that have about 5-6 hidden gems each, adding up to about 75 or so gems alone.

There are also hidden Boo’s to find on each floor and secret ghosts to uncover and tons of cash to find as well. And there are even two different multiplayer modes that provide local and online play if you want some friends to join in on the ghost-hunting fun.

Essentially, if you’re looking for a longer game with a bit more content, Luigi’s Mansion 3 comes out on top in this category.

Winner: Luigi’s Mansion 3

Conclusion

There’s no denying that both of these spooky Halloween games have a lot to offer when it comes to providing fun and unique gameplay experiences, and choosing one all depends on your style of game and what console you own of course.

If you have a Nintendo Switch and are a fan of the Luigi’s Mansion series or puzzle-action games in general, LM3 might be the game for you to buy, especially if you’re looking for something to play for the next few weeks before Pokemon Sword and Shield come out (if you’re into that).

And on the other hand, if you own a PS4 and are a fan of those classic mascot platformers such as Crash and Spyro, then MediEvil might be right up your alley.

It’s really up to you at the end of the day, but if you only had one choice and if you weren’t sure what to buy, we definitely have to recommend waiting a few days and just go and buy Luigi’s Mansion 3 for the Switch.

It’s a brand-new title that has all of the makings of a modern adventure game and is a high-quality Nintendo title. MediEvil is still a good choice if you were maybe a fan of the PS classic, but Luigi’s Mansion 3 is the more spootacular game.

Overall Winner: Luigi’s Mansion 3
