Is John Marston in Red Dead Redemption 2? What You Need to Know

The sequel is packed with plenty of personalities, both old and new alike. Here’s what you need to know about John Marston in Red Dead Redemption 2.

If you’re new to the Red Dead Redemption universe, both games actually have two different protagonists. Here, you’ll be playing as the senior member of the Van der Linde Gang, Arthur Morgan.

Back in the first game, however, you took on the role of John Marston –a former outlaw who is forced to bring the members of his old gang to justice. While Red Dead Redemption 2 is technically a sequel, the story takes place before the events of the first game.

That said, we definitely will see John Marston in this game, although with a supporting role. He is not a playable character and is reduced to an NPC that you can still meet and talk to.

Since the game takes place in the past, John Marston is still a member of Dutch Van der Linde’s gang who travels with his wife, Abigail, and his son, Jack. He suffers an injury early on in Red Dead Redemption 2, but he eventually returns with the full gang later on.

It’s worth noting that Arthur Morgan actually ranks higher than John Marston in the Van der Linde gang. The latter sits at a lower-middle rank, meaning he doesn’t have as much influence as Arthur does in Red Dead Redemption 2.

That said, players will get to see how John Marston was actually like back when he was still in the gang. His involvement in this group played a big part in his own game, so it’s pretty interesting to see how things will turn out in Red Dead Redemption 2.

John Marston is only one of the other characters from the first game that are in Red Dead Redemption 2. His wife, Abigail, who also played a fairly big role in the gang along with her son, Jack.

Of course, we also get another look at Dutch Van der Linde, who serves as the gang’s leader and one of the main antagonists of the first game. Other antagonists who also make an appearance are Bill Williamson and Javier Escuella.

John Marston in Camp

Whenever you’re hanging around camp in Red Dead Redemption 2, you might see John sitting about as well. Just like with any other NPC in the game, you can walk up to him, hold L2, and then press a button to greet or antagonize him. This will trigger a few lines of dialogue to flesh him out even more.

As you go through the story, John will also occasionally act as a quest giver, and you’ll be able to go on missions with him.

That’s pretty much everything you need to know about John Marston in Red Dead Redemption 2. For more tips and tricks on the game, make sure to take a look at our wiki. The page is packed with all sorts of useful guides to help you on your adventure.
