5 Cool Things You Can Do in State of Decay 2

Use a Bicycle Chainset as a Weapon

As much as you’d hope that you’d have something like an ax or a sword if you found yourself in a zombie apocalypse, there’s no avoiding the fact that everyone else is going to want these melee killing-machines, and State of Decay 2 doesn’t forget this. It gets a little wacky with its weapons, though not quite on the same scale as Dead Rising 4.

One of our personal favorite makeshift zombie skull crushers was a bicycle chainset, known as the Monogear Axe in-game. Grab it by the crank and let the heavy circular metal at the other end do the damage to the rotting flesh of your adversaries. Does it result in any different animations? Not really, but their inclusion almost helps to relay that sense of desperation survivors would have in a zombie apocalypse.

Still, the Monogear Axe is one of the better melee weapons you can get in State of Decay 2, so it’s also pretty darn practical, too!

Drive Through a Horde of Zombies in a Police Car with the Sirens on

State of Decay 2 reminds you of the importance of keeping quiet when around zombies. Gunshots, sprinting, the hum of a car engine – all of these sounds are enough to have the undead stumbling over in your direction. But being all quiet and stealthy isn’t always all that fun. Sometimes you want to just let your hair down and make as much noise as humanly possible before sprinting across a field away from a perseverant bunch of flesh-eaters.

And that’s why one of State of Decay 2’s personal quests pretty much lets you do just that. Well, minus the sprinting and plus a police car. While you’re tasked with running down a bunch of zombies as part of the quest, you’ll still have access to the car afterward, and by pressing down the right stick, you can get the sirens blaring. And because noise attracts zombies, and the siren’s an incredibly loud and obnoxious noise, they’ll swarm to you like bees around honey. Then, reverse back a bit, line ’em all up, and put your pedal to the metal. It also proves as a pretty effective method for clearing out Infestations, too.

Take on the Zombie Apocalypse with Friends or Strangers

It’s one of the key features in State of Decay 2, and it certainly makes exploring the world that little bit more interesting. After the isolated survival experience of its predecessor, State of Decay 2 adds in up to four-player co-op multiplayer. You can drop in, help scavenge resources and slice through some zombies, clear out an Infestation or two and make the grind that little less painless for your friends.

Playing State of Decay 2 in co-op enhances the whole scavenging experience whether you’re playing with friends or strangers. The ability to volunteer to help other random players or request help from those that volunteer via your Radio also adds a sense of realism to matchmaking proceedings. The co-op certainly can be janky, but if you’re willing to overlook it and get it working, it makes for some great multiplayer fun.

Leave a Lasting Legacy on Your Territory

When you first set out in State of Decay 2, your main objective is to clear your territory of the Plague Hearts scattered across the land. You’ll need to upgrade your base, scavenge for resources and recruit more survivors along the way to give yourself the best odds of succeeding. However, once all the Plague Hearts have been destroyed, State of Decay 2 doesn’t stop there.

Your community’s leader will have a lasting legacy they want to leave on the territory, and it’ll be down to you to ensure that they succeed in establishing that legacy. We’re not going to tell you any more about what these Legacy missions are, but they add a little bit of ‘end game’ content so to speak that feels a little different from the same ol’ you’ve been doing for 20+ hours by that point.

Set an Entire Horde on Fire with Thermite Grenades

Sometimes, the zombie horde you’ve managed to accrue chasing behind you is a little too much for those melee weapons you brought with you. Heck, even a pistol isn’t going to tear through all those rotten skulls fast enough to save you from an unfortunate death outside the gas station you were looting. That doesn’t mean you’re entirely done for. Praise the lord for thermite (and other incendiary throwables).

While Molotov cocktails are all well and good, if you want to start a fire that burns brightly in the face of 20 zombies, Thermite Grenades are where it’s at. Group them up together as best you can and begin let fly with the throwable. It won’t take long for those potential dangers to go up in a blaze of fiery glory (and net you a bunch of Influence in the meantime). Now, sit back and think of all the time and stamina you would have wasted beating them all to a pulp with a crowbar. Wasn’t that much more efficient (and enjoyable)? Yes, we thought so, too.
