City of Brass (May 4)

BioShock is an incredibly well-known name in gaming, and City of Brass comes from a few former senior members of the BioShock development team. The game has a unique setting, described as a “first-person Arabian Nights adventure,” and that seeps into its aesthetic and gameplay. Similarly to something like BioShock, you have a few different abilities at your disposal, a versatile whip, your sword, explosive vases, and more. The whip itself looks to be one of the most unique features in City of Brass, playing into combat just as much as it does exploration and traversal.

You assume the role of a thief trying to reach the center of the fabled City of Brass, and claim the legendary treasure that lies at its heart. Hopefully the variety that the game seems to have can stay through the entire experience, but this is one game to definitely keep an eye out for this month.

Little Witch Academia: Chamber of Time (May 15)

Little Witch Academia

Bandai Namco is on a hot streak with anime games releasing The Seven Deadly Sins: Knights of Brittania earlier this year, and games for Gundam, Black Clover, and My Hero Academia all on the way. Little Witch Academia: Chamber of Time is another notch in that list, adapting the adorable Netflix anime into a gorgeous side-scrolling game. Chamber of Time uses the same animation style as the show by Studio Trigger, and there’s even original scenes animated by the studio for the game.

You play as the anime’s main character, witch-in-training Akko, as she explores Luna Nova Magical Academy along with her friends. You’ll follow the main storyline of the show, as Akko and friends take classes and try to uncover the seven wonders of the Academy. Multiplayer features let you undertake raids and other elements with friends, and there’s plenty to see and do around the school. Chamber of Time could be another great entry in a year chock-full of anime games.

Dark Souls Remastered (May 25)

Dark Souls Remastered

Dark Souls’ impact on the gaming industry has been monumental, even creating a veritable new genre known as “Souls-likes.” After three new entries in the series, including Bloodborne, the first Dark Souls is finally returning with a remaster. There aren’t huge changes made to the game, but it has been completely visually upgraded and runs at 60fps, which should absolutely help with the nightmare-inducing Blighttown.

Most other changes are small quality of life improvements for matchmaking and multiplayer that should make for a much smoother experience. If you’re a veteran there’s a whole new reason to jump in, but if you’re brand new to the series there’s no better time to see what the hype is all about.

Detroit: Become Human (May 25)

Detroit: Become Human

Detroit: Become Human has been a long time coming, announced all the way back in 2015 during Sony’s press conference at Paris Games Week. The next game from Quantic Dream and David Cage, makers of Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls, Detroit is a bit more sci-fi inspired than the previous titles. Gameplay is quite similar to something like Heavy Rain, as it’s a third-person action-adventure game that lets you roam around environments, talk to characters, and of course make decisions. Player choice will play more of a role than ever before, with each situation branching out in a number of ways, something Quantic Dream has really highlighted in trailers so far.

The story revolves around three different androids, and their evolving role in society, as well as the prejudice they face from humans on a daily basis. Kara is a new housekeeper android that develops artificial consciousness, Connor is an advanced police model that hunts down other androids that have deviated from their programming, and Markus is a caretaker android that decides to try and start a revolution. Whether Detroit can live up to the legacy set by Heavy Rain remains to be seen, but it certainly has the potential to be one of the PS4’s standout exclusives of 2018.
