Shadow of the Colossus
Top 5 Best PS4 Games of Q1 2018
The original Shadow of the Colossus for the PlayStation 2 is considered by some to be one of the greatest, and most important games ever made. So surely, a remaster for the PlayStation 4 would be just as great and important? Yes, yes it is.
Shadow of the Colossus, has been praised by both critics and fans alike, and holds one of the highest Metacritic scores of 2018 so far. We loved it as well, scoring it a 4.5 out of 5 back in January.
For those who have never played the original, the story follows Wander, as he travels across a strange, forbidden land in search of Colossi to defeat. It has a minimalist approach in its storytelling, and like many other Team Ico games, the narrative will slowly unravel in unexpected ways. Of course, because it’s a remake, it has an improved control scheme (huge deal for those that remember the PS2 version) and much better visual quality.
If you somehow missed out the first time on PS2, or just want to revisit an all-time classic, The Shadow of the Colossus remake is great, and among the best PS4 games so far in 2018.

Yakuza 6: The Song of Life
Top 5 Best PS4 Games of Q1 2018
Yakuza 6: The Song of Life finally puts a bookend on the story of Kazuma Kiryu. The story picks up directly after the events of Yakuza 5, but it also manages to be just a good a starting point for newcomers. It features a self-contained story that, sure, longtime fans will be able to connect to the other games, but it is one that is also interesting enough to stand on its own as well.
Combat and exploration got a shot in the arm thanks to the new Dragon Engine powering Yakuza 6, and everything in the game is smoother, seamless, and interconnected in a way it wasn’t before. And, of course, it looks a lot prettier too. Also, because it’s a Yakuza game, there are plenty of sidequests, mini-games, and other things to distract you when you want a break from the main campaign.
A Way Out
Top 5 Best PS4 Games of Q1 2018
There’s something about playing together with a friend in the same room that can’t be replicated online. A Way Out is one of those games that begs to be played locally on a couch with someone else (although there is an online mode as well).
A Way Out is already a contender for the best co-op experience of this year and we’re only a quarter of the way through the year. It follows the story of Leo and Vincent, two men in prison for a crime they didn’t commit, who couldn’t be more different from each other. They have completely different motivations and personalities, but they are forced to work together if they ever want to make it out prison and see the outside world again.
There’s not a lot of games out there like A Way Out, and if you have a friend to play through it with and want to experience a great co-op game and story together, it’s a must try.
Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom
Top 5 Best PS4 Games of Q1 2018
Finally we arrive to Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom. Receiving a rare 5/5 exemplary score from our editor Alex Gibson, Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom is one of the best JRPGs to come out this generation, and it improves, and adds onto so much of what the first game got right.
Combat received an overhaul to be more action-packed, and to be more similar to games like Kingdom Hearts. There’s more of a variety to the gameplay this time around as well. You’ll be responsible for building up a kingdom which includes a new mechanic that sees you recruiting citizens to unlock new weapons, abilities, and more. And of course, the game’s music and visuals are incredible and are coupled with storytelling that is an improvement over the original.
You can read Alex’s full thoughts here, but if you are a JRPG fan, and own a PS4 and haven’t played it yet, get on it because games like Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom don’t come around that often.
