With King Evan usurped from his throne, building the new kingdom of Evermore is a central pillar of Ni No Kuni 2’s story. It also forms the main thrust for an important gameplay mechanic: kingdom building. Players are tasked not only with constructing these new buildings but also recruiting the very citizens that will populate them. At two separate points in Ni No Kuni 2, you’ll need to reach a higher Kingdom Level in order to progress the plot. Level 2 requires 25 citizens and Level 3 requires 50. And it’s actually possible to recruit double that number for the completionists out there.

Unsurprisingly, all of this takes a great deal of time. So is there a faster way to recruit citizens in Ni No Kuni 2? Well, yes and no. You may have noticed that any side quest that offers a citizen as a reward is represented with a person-shaped icon beside it. You can also view the citizen you’ll receive on the right-hand side when cycling through your side-quests too. But side quests aren’t the only way to get more citizens.

At each town, you’ll find a man holding a sign. He’s a representative of Swift Solutions called the Taskmaster, and he’s got almost endless errands for you to run in Ni No Kuni 2. These errands range from anything to handing over a certain type of food or weapon to slaying monsters. In exchange, he’ll gift you Tokens of Gratitude, and these can be exchanged either for rare items or toward scouting for new citizens. By choosing the option to scout for new citizens, you’ll be able to select from a list of thirty or so different characters to add to your kingdom. Each of these citizens will require varying amounts of tokens depending on their skills and attributes.

As you progress through the story of Ni No Kuni 2, make sure you pick up absolutely everything you see. That way, when it comes to ticking off errands from the taskmaster at Swift Solutions, you’ll find you already have many of the resources and items he’ll be after. Similarly, making sure you’ve got citizens assigned to farming the mining camp, fish markets, and ranch will also help in this regard.
