7 Gaming Characters So Lucky They Should Play the Lottery

This article is over 6 years old and may contain outdated information

When it comes to overcoming unimaginable obstacles, some video game characters have more than talent and special abilities on their side. Whether there’s always a handhold waiting for them when they slip off the side of a cliff or a doctor willing to resurrect them after they’ve been shot in the head, they’ve got that special something that gives them an edge to succeed and wouldn’t have come nearly as far without it. Some are blessed with good fortune more often than others, however, and of these are the seven luckiest characters in video games. Spoiler warning: there will be some spoilers for the games ahead involving specific characters, if you’d rather avoid spoilers entirely you may want to skip a section or two.

 Akiyama Shun (Yakuza Series)

Luckiest Characters in Video Games

One can only hope they’ll be as lucky as Akiyama one day. After a run of hard times, his fortunes reverse as millions of yen literally rain down from the sky onto him. Afterward, he’s saved by an undercover cop from muggers trying to take his new wealth and is able to invest it toward becoming one of the most successful money lenders in Kamurocho.

And that’s not the end of his lucky streak either: In the climax of Yakuza 4, a would-be fatal shot to the heart is blocked by a stack of cash stored in his suit pocket. Coincidence? Maybe so, but it still shows he’s got one hell of a run for luck with money that shows no signs of stopping.

The Assassins (Assassins Creed Series)

Luckiest Characters in Video Games

assassin's creed

Having carefully honed assassination skills is one thing, but the bloodline of master killers in the Assassin’s Creed series have something special watching out for them on a regular basis. Constantly traipsing about on rooftops and ledges without slipping off, outrunning an ever growing number of authorities and making death defying leaps from the tops of the highest towers into piles of hay just soft enough to cushion them, each protagonist manages to see things go their way several dozens of times before they meet their end, and even that’s usually from old age. Protagonists of the game or no, that’s a hell of a lot of good fortune to follow them on a regular basis.

B.J. Blazkowicz (Wolfenstein Series)

Luckiest Characters in Video Games

wolfenstein II

While few would ever want to see this Nazi killing machine fail at what he does best, you can’t help but stand in awe at how often fortune favors this A-class soldier. From daring prison escapes to finding victory against wave after wave of Nazi soldiers, Blazkowicz almost always finds a way to overcome his eternal enemies.

Even when he doesn’t, some miracle will occur to help him live to fight another day; like, for example, when he has his head chopped off and his allies are there in the knick of time to save him with some new technology that was perfected right when they needed it. Sure, part of it’s how tough he is, but the other part is his undeniable luck.

Master Chief (Halo Series)

Luckiest Characters in Video Games

halo 3

“You had something they didn’t, something no one saw but me. Can you guess? Luck.”

These are the words used by Cortana to kick off Halo 3, and the perfect encapsulation of what allows Halo’s elite space marine to succeed against impossible odds. Whether he’s facing down entire battalions of Covenant, racing to escape a planet-sized detonation or dusting himself off after falling back down to Earth following a mission in space, the Chief always finds himself coming out on top, and he wouldn’t be able to do it without a seemingly endless well of good fortune.

 Lara Croft (Tomb Raider Series)

Luckiest Characters in Video Games

top, reviewed, games, 2016, metacritic, best, rise of the tomb raider

Skilled and resourceful as she may be, one can’t help but think the protagonist of the Tomb Raider series has a hell of a lot of luck on her side. In the first game of the recent reboot, she frequently sees herself dodging precarious spike traps and deadly falls (so long as the player succeeded at the timed button presses) while fighting her way through an army of well armed island inhabitants; then, in the following game, she survives a number of challenges brought on by the elements and the dangers hidden within them, from icy mountain sides to territorial wildlife. Even if adventure’s in her blood, there’s more than enough proof to show she’s got something to give her an edge in the end, and luckily it doesn’t look to be tapped out just yet.

Nathan Drake (Uncharted Series)

Luckiest Characters in Video Games

Let’s be frank: Nathan Drake Should have been dead 100 times over at this point. Falling from cliffs and buildings, caught in hundreds of fire fights and roped into a number of deadly quests for treasure by friends and foes alike, there’s been every opportunity for him to meet his end. And yet something always appears to save him, whether it’s a handhold just close enough for him to grab after he falls or a well placed rocket launcher that allows him to dispose of a rampaging tank. Fortune smiles on Drake, and does so up to the conclusion of his story in Uncharted 4 and, hopefully, beyond.

The Courier (Fallout: New Vegas)

Luckiest Characters in Video Games

After being shot in the head and buried in a shallow grave, most would be expected to accept the bad hand life had dealt them, punch out and make their way to the afterlife. This wasn’t the case for New Vegas’ courier, however, as they soon find themselves dug up by a friendly robot and revived by Doc Mitchell of Goodsprings.

From there, any number of examples are available to show luck follows the Courier wherever they go, from being selected by the enigmatic Mr. House to ensure the success of the Vegas strip to having the opportunity to control it for themselves. If that doesn’t show they’re one of the luckiest characters ever, there’s not much else that could.
