The Walking Dead A New Frontier

PLEASE NOTE THERE ARE MAJOR STORY SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THE WALKING DEAD: A NEW FRONTIER EPISODE FIVE. IF YOU WANT TO EXPERIENCE THE EPISODE AS IT WAS INTENDED, WE ADVISE YOU TURN BACK NOW. ALSO, NOTE THAT THIS STORY SUMMARY IS BASED ON THE MAJOR DECISIONS WE MADE DURING THE SERIES AND THE EPISODE. WE’VE HIGHLIGHTED THESE WHENEVER THEY APPEARED IN THE STORY.

A New Frontier episode five starts off with yet another flashback with Javi, David and their father playing dominoes before the outbreak. Unfortunately, Javi loses to David, who then spends a good chunk of time telling Javi how he’s better at just about everything than him. David then tells the others that they owe him $10 each, which the father says he’ll pay for both of them.

When Javi goes to grab his father’s wallet, however, he finds a doctor’s note informing him that he has cancer. The three of them talk about why he kept it a secret, and he explains that he didn’t want to scare them and that it’s his life and he can do as he wishes. Despite David offering to pay for the treatment, their father declines. David then leaves the room and Javi’s father tells him of the importance of family and asks Javi to promise him that he and David will look out for one another. This is a major decision and you can choose to accept or decline his promise. After this, you’re transported back to the present day.

With zombies now roaming the streets of Richmond after episode four, Javi sprints towards the truck that Kate was in, shooting zombies as he goes. After reaching it, he finds she’s not there and makes his way back to David just behind him. The two go searching for her along the streets, and eventually find her laying down by some stairs. Or at least they think it’s her. David runs over and turns her over only for a zombie to try mauling his face off. Javi runs over and pulls it off before someone lands a crowbar straight into its skull. It’s Kate! She’s alive and gives Javi a big hug in front of David. After watching the outpouring of emotions between the two, David ruthlessly kills a zombie, curb stomping its head into the ground. The three then see Gabe and Clem surrounded by zombies, however, they take care of them on their own and the group runs inside a nearby building for refuge.

CHAPTER TWO

THE WALKING DEAD: A NEW FRONTIER EPISODE FIVE

Back together and trying to work out what to do, tensions rise between Gabe, who is disgusted at his father shooting Clint in the head as they were negotiating, and David who’s furious at Gabe for not paying attention to him. Once everything has calmed down, which you can help out with if you so choose, Dave, Clem, and Gabe go to check out what’s going on and survey the scene.

Kate and Javi look for a safe place to get away from the undead, while Javi tries to calm Kate down as she’s freaking out about how this is all their fault. She talks about how she’s glad Mariana isn’t alive anymore because she wouldn’t want her to see how her mother and father have turned out and moves off down the hallway, saddened. Fortunately, Javi is there to pick her spirits up and the two agree to try and fix things if it’s possible, though they’re not entirely sure that it is.

The two then head into a room to find Eleanor treating some of the Richmond citizens. However, she immediately starts yelling at Javi asking how he could have done something like that (Tripp being killed in the incidents at the end of episode four), when she said she wanted to stay and not piss people off like Joan. That’s why she told Joan all about your plans and basically betrayed you. She wants to help people here and has the equipment to do so, rather than just stitching them up and hoping for the best. You can choose to forgive her or not if you want, we did.

Dave, Gabe, and Clem now head into the room and the injured woman Eleanor is tending to cries about her lost little girl out in the fray. Eleanor asks for some privacy and at that moment the injured woman springs a gun on Javi. David and Javi try to talk her down, but Kate steps in the way and tells the woman that it’s her fault all of this happened as she was injured and was brought here. As the woman, known as Fern comes to her senses, David disarms her, breaking her arm and knocking her to the floor. As he explains he was stopping her from shooting Javi, the woman starts crawling to the gun on the floor. David then turns around to shoot her, but Gabe runs in to help and gets punched in the face by David who didn’t know who he was in the heat of the moment. He apologizes profusely, while everyone rallies to the side of Gabe, looking at David. He leaves the room on his own, but Kate tells Javi to go after him as she’s seen that look in his eye before.

CHAPTER THREE

THE WALKING DEAD: A NEW FRONTIER EPISODE FIVE

Javi heads out onto the building roof to find David stood on the ledge asking for Javi to come over. David essentially tells Javi how he doesn’t have a good heart and that he wants to change, and how he always admired how much of a good guy Javi was. After some convincing, David steps down from the ledge with Javi just as Kate appears.

They tell you that Ava was outside and was rescued by Gabe when he spotted her (this could be Tripp depending on your choices in episode four). Javi speaks to her and tries to make amends and while not convincing, she just tells him to be glad that it wasn’t her choosing between him and David.

With the herd taking over Richmond, you can choose to bail out of the city or try and fix things. We opted to try and fix things up, and Kate tells you of construction vehicles that she spotted near a water tower on the way into town that could be used to cover the breach in the wall and clear out Richmond. Agreed on the plan, everyone sets out jumping across buildings up onto the overpass.

On the journey, David asks Javi about why Kate hugged him. You can tell him what you want, but he won’t believe the truth even if you tell him it. Gabe then pulls Javi to one side and tells him that when he was younger, David used to tell him “not to be like his uncle.” Now that he’s seen how they both are, he apologizes for everything and says that the both must take care of David now.

At this point, they reach a pile-up of cars. The group has to get across the ledge and one by one they make it across. With Javi and Ava to go, however, Javi loses balance and Ava grabs his hand, saving him from the lethal fall. With Javi safely across, Ava lectures him on how he needs to be more careful, just as a Muerto clambers out of the car behind her and drags her off the ledge to her death. After some mourning and consoling of David, the group moves on only to be met by another gap and a crashed helicopter.

The group needs to use the rotor blade to swing across, starting with the lightest first. Javi is the last to cross and the blade snaps midway over. After climbing up what remains of it, Javi and the group move towards the water tower and finally spot the vehicles they seek.

Unfortunately, the place is crawling with zombies, but Clem comes up with the idea of covering themselves in the zombie’s guts, turning on a noisy generator to distract the crowd and then grabbing the vehicles. Conveniently, Clem then reminds Javi that he used her as part of a trade with Conrad (at least we did in our playthrough), and that wasn’t very polite. So Javi heads down and gets the job done.

Now that they’ve got to the vehicles, though, David has different plans. He tells everyone to get into a smaller vehicle as he’s taking them out of this place to safety. We refused and told him that we’d fix it, but he refuses to be a part of it. Gabe decides to go with his father, and Kate accepts his decision, but gets furious with David when he makes a comment about “not letting the same thing happen to him as Kate and Javi let happen to Mariana.” She slaps him before turning around and kissing Javi, which, of course, leads to a seriously pissed off David.

We opted to have Javi confess he and Kate were in love to David, defending the relationship. Unfortunately, a furious David hits you with a wrench and tries strangling you with it, again injuring Gabe in the process as he was trying to help. Throughout this, you have the option to fight back or just say “I love you.” We refused to fight back because we’re lovers, not fighters! Eventually, Clem puts a stop to it by shooting David in the arm, alerting nearby Muertos to your position. David slams the garage door shut before driving off with Gabe.

You now have to make a decision between going after Gabe and David on a motorbike or heading into Richmond to save it with Kate. We opted to go with Kate. Clementine will help do whichever one Javi doesn’t, so don’t worry too much about abandoning someone entirely.

CHAPTER FOUR

THE WALKING DEAD: A NEW FRONTIER EPISODE FIVE

Please note if you choose to go after David and Gabe in chapter three, your experience in chapter four will be entirely different.

This is a fairly short chapter that sees Javi and Kate return to Richmond riding a huge digger. As you begin to reach the gates, you’ll find Jesus on horseback taking down some walkers. As soon as he was in contact with his people he returned to make sure you guys were safe.

Kate begins driving towards the gate while Javi thins out the crowd of walkers. Upon reaching the gate, Javi uses the front loader to get on top of it and use the controls to open it up. The two then plug the gap in the wall by using the digger to place the busted truck in the wall, while Jesus and his people clear up the remaining walkers.

Clem and Gabe then appear out of nowhere. Gabe is a little injured, the car got overrun with walkers and crashed. She was barely able to save Gabe, but David is dead. She tells Javi that it looked like David had turned when she got there and that Gabe had to end him. Gabe tells you that David wanted him to tell you to take care of each other.

As Clem guides Gabe to safety for rest, both Kate and Javi head to the wrecked car and David’s corpse. Upon finding David’s body, she grabs his military tags and buries them nearby. Kate promised that she’d do it. Just before they leave him in peace, Javi promises he’ll look after Kate and Gabe, and Kate leaves her wedding ring on the grave.

CHAPTER FIVE

THE WALKING DEAD: A NEW FRONTIER EPISODE FIVE

Chapter five takes place three days after the events of chapter four. Both Kate and Javi are inside a church looking at a wall of people who have passed away in the attack. They place a photo of David on the wall, talking about how they have a lot of work still to do and that the herd could come back, but Kate feels more comfortable and calm here than she ever did elsewhere.

She asks Javi if he’d want a fresh start, to start a family as a couple. You can choose to reply however you want, but we agreed because these two are relationship goals.

The two head outside and as Jesus heads off, he tells Javi that Richmond could do with a new leader like him. You can choose to accept or decline here and we chose to accept. This is a major decision, but it remains unclear how this will affect the game in the future.

With Jesus gone, you spot Dr. Lingard (if you didn’t kill him already) who doesn’t thank you for keeping him alive but will tell Clem where AJ is. Apparently, he’s at McCarroll Ranch, not too far from Richmond. At least, that’s where they left him. Clem then confirms that she’s going to find AJ and that it’s her time. She asks for one last favor from Javi before she leaves.

CHAPTER SIX

THE WALKING DEAD: A NEW FRONTIER EPISODE FIVE

Of course, it’s a haircut! While Javi does his best to style Clem’s hair, the two talk about baseball, Gabe’s obvious crush (and Clem’s reciprocated feelings), and whether Clem was a good mom to AJ.

As he finishes the job, Javi tells Clem he’ll teach her about baseball, and she asks if he’ll teach AJ too. This is a major decision and you’ll have to choose between telling her to leave him be, or to bring him back. We told her to bring him back.

As Clem leaves, she gives Gabe a hug and bids farewell to Kate and Javi. She walks off into the sunset and A New Frontier comes to an end (except for the post-credits scene).

Post-Credits

THE WALKING DEAD: A NEW FRONTIER EPISODE FIVE

The Walking Dead A New Frontier

Once the credits have rolled for A New Frontier episode five, players are treated to a short but sweet post-credits scene. It basically shows Clem attacking a bunch of Muertos as she heads across a bridge and clambers down a truck on her journey to find AJ. As she walks off into the distance, the screen fades to black and the words ‘Clementine’s story will continue’ flash up on the screen.
